Key Highlights:

  • A Nintendo Switch 2 port of Fable is being considered by Xbox, it is claimed.
  • The game will likely be scaled back to accommodate for the Switch 2โ€™s much weaker hardware.
  • Donโ€™t expect a release anytime soon.

Xboxโ€™s upcoming Fable soft reboot is scheduled to be released on the PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 some time later this year. Notably absent was the mention of a Nintendo Switch 2 port, which does seem odd considering Xboxโ€™s recent push towards breaking free from exclusivity deals.

However, a recent report seemingly suggests that the Switch 2 could get an official port of Fable later down the road, which is quite encouraging to read.

Insider Hints At Future Switch 2 Version of Fable

As mentioned in a rather cryptic X post from industry insider Jez Corden, a Nintendo Switch 2 port for Fable 2 is currently under consideration for a future release. He also goes on to mention that this isnโ€™t a 100% guaranteed, which means that the possibility of a port never releasing is also there.

In other words, the team is heavily considering a Switch 2 port, but there has yet to be any development regarding the matter just yet.

Jez has been pretty consistent when it comes to leaks surrounding Microsoft products (including Xbox), so his words can be taken with a smaller grain of salt here. It is most certainly possible that Xbox is considering a Switch 2 release for Fable, but given the technical limitations of the platform, this might prove to more difficult than expected.

How Well Would This Theoretical Version Run?

Before we dive into possible performance comparisons, it should be kept in mind that the Nintendo Switch 2 is, first and foremost, a handheld device. Like most other handheld devices, it must obey the laws of physics and energy conservation.

As such, the device is quite thermally constrained and forgoes high performance in favor of higher efficiency (in other words, more battery life). This translates directly into performance, and the Switch 2 is more or less equivalent to a Steam Deck (albeit with 4 GB less system RAM and a much better, custom DLSS upscaler).

Given how massive Fable 2 looks, porting the game over to the Switch 2 is going to be very difficult, especially when we take into account the systemโ€™s measly 12 gigabytes of shared system RAM (that also happens to be VRAM as well).

The team will need nothing short of a technical miracle to be able to pull this through, although it should be doable with the right amount of compromises and tweaks in place.

Assuming it ever releases, Fable on the Nintendo Switch 2 will most likely target 30 frames per second, with a target resolution of 1080p and 720p for both docked and handheld modes respectively.

Expect graphical settings to be scaled back as well, with a heavy use of DLSS upscaling to ensure the final touches. It all sounds a bit too technical, and it probably is. However, weโ€™ve already seen โ€˜impossibleโ€™ ports such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt  being released for the original Nintendo Switch (which was surprisingly playable), so expecting a Fable release on the console shouldnโ€™t be too much of an unreasonable want.

As for the potential release, it is difficult to say. Xbox will likely have more information to share with us in the future, assuming they can get the game up and running on Nintendoโ€™s latest hardware. Until then, they will likely be busy with the console/PC releases.
