Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch’s sequel to the stellar Ghost of Tsushima has finally gone gold, over a month before the game officially launches for the public. It’s a massive achievement for the team and it means that they’re at the end of the active development cycle. At this point, what remains are the final touches, which also suggests that the game won’t be delayed anymore.
Yes, there’s always a possibility that Ghost of Yotei could receive a set of day one patches, and some post-launch support too, but either way, it’s a major milestone that Sucker Punch has achieved. With a month remaining before launch, the developers have a decent window that they can use to fine tune and iron out any bugs that are present in the game currently.
Sucker Punch Shares New Gameplay Trailer to Celebrate Ghost of Yotei Milestone
In a post on Bluesky, the developers shared their excitement about achieving the milestone and mentioned that they couldn’t wait for everyone to hop into Ezo on October 2nd. The fact that the developers mentioned the release date in their post suggests that there won’t be any delays with the launch. Although game development has undergone major transformations over the years, the term “going gold” has remained constant.
Back in the day, once the development was complete, the master copy of the games would be printed on gold-colored discs before they hit production. With modern-day cloud storage now available, the aforementioned process of printing isn’t done anymore, but the term has stayed. To commemorate the event, Sucker Punch Studios released a new trailer that showcases some of the gunplay that the game has to offer.

Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603, a time when guns weren’t exactly popular in Japan, and were just starting to get popular. So, don’t expect to go all guns blazing, like you would in an FPS title. Despite their clunkyness and extended reload times, using guns in the combat loop looks increasingly satisfying. You’ll still be relying on your sword quite a lot, and if you can master the movement, then it’ll probably be the most aesthetically pleasing way to behead an enemy.
The name of the trailer doesn’t really do justice to the in-game footage that the developers have decided to share. It shows Atsu waltzing her way into an enemy camp and then slicing through enemies like a hot knife through butter. We also get a look at her wolf companion right at the end of the gameplay loop, but the animal isn’t a part of the combat here.

Do You Need to Play Ghost of Tsushima Before Playing Ghost of Yotei?
No, you don’t need to play the Ghost of Tsushima before playing Ghost of Yotei because the two aren’t linked through lore. However, the former is a wonderfully made title, and is something that you should experience if you have the chance. Additionally, since both these games are set in the same universe, they’ll share a few mechanics between them.
So, getting a hang of how these mechanics work could come in handy when you’re exploring Ezo. One of the main factors that look similar is the combat. Since katanas are the primary choice of weapon for both protagonists, the swordplay should be similar across both the titles, with a certain amount of refinement in Ghost of Yotei. So, if you’re looking to pull off moves like the ones that you saw in the new gun gameplay trailer, then it’s important that you follow Jin Sakai’s storyline from start to finish.
