Bethesda Confirms Second Major DLC for Starfield But There’s No Release Date

Starfield will be receiving a new DLC soon Starfield will be receiving a new DLC soon

Key Highlights

  • Starfield will soon be receiving a brand new story DLC.
  • Although there’s no release date, it’s expected to drop ahead of the game’s PlayStation 5 launch next year.
  • Bethesda also has several free updates lined up which include major community requested features, including a more rewarding space exploration system.

Starfield is all set to receive a brand new DLC soon, which is likely to introduce a brand new storyline for everyone to experience. Despite being 25 years in the making, Bethesda’s space exploration title had a rather lukewarm reception at launch. The same thing happened with the Shattered Space expansion. However, that’s something the developers will actively be trying to avoid with the upcoming DLC.

For most video games, DLCs introduce fresh storyline content which prolongs the game’s lifespan and encourages sales. Bethesda is known to make video games which are timeless, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one such example. Starfield was touted as another timeless masterpiece, but it’s yet to achieve that feat.

When Does the New Starfield DLC Launch?

As of now, there’s no release window for the new Starfield DLC, but it’s not arriving anytime soon. During a Developer Spotlight on YouTube, Lead Creative Producer for Starfield, Timothy Lamb, confirmed that the second DLC was indeed being worked on. It’s going to be a part of a major update where the developers plan on launching more tweaks and fixes that the community has been asking for ever since the game launched.

In the absence of a proper launch date, it’s possible that the new DLC will drop ahead of the game’s PlayStation 5 launch in 2026. Despite having been released in 2023, Starfield heading to PS5 is bound to give it a spike in popularity and Microsoft would like to use that opportunity to drive some additional revenue during that period. So, it seems like a good time to release the new DLC.

It’s worth noting that this is the third time that Bethesda is talking about the upcoming Starfield DLC, but they haven’t gone into specifics yet. The reasoning behind this could be that they don’t want to set any expectations that they cannot meet, or maybe, it’s something so grand, that it’s better off being a surprise. It could also be that the team ran into issues with the DLC during development, hence they’re holding back information. Either way, it’s best to assume that the new story addon isn’t coming out anytime before next year.

What to Expect From the New Starfield Updates?

No matter when the new Starfield update launches, there are a lot of major QoL fixes that you’ll get to see, as confirmed by Timothy Lamb. For starters, the developers are planning on introducing a brand new gameplay system, along with some community-created content. He’s also mentioned that the team is working on improving space travel and combat to make it more rewarding.

Space was one of the major aspects as well as the biggest selling point of the game. There aren’t many video games that have managed to include space travel and combat as a part of their base gameplay. Although it did create major hype, the space segments in the game were extremely bland and had little to no variety whatsoever. All that might change in the new Starfield update. If Bethesda does manage to revamp the space traversal bits, that itself will bring a lot of players back to the game, because the idea they had was unique and hadn’t been done before.

As for the community-driven content, the sky is the limit. This content is being worked upon by some of the verified creators in the community. Bethesda’s games are also known for the mods that the community creators come up with. Some of these mods are extremely elaborate, and add a completely new system to the game or compliment a pre-existing system in a major way. While Bethesda hasn’t revealed what the community created content will be, it’s definitely going to be something worth looking out for.
