Mobile Gamers Can Finally Play Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption Red Dead Redemption

Key Highlights:

  • Red Dead Redemption is making its way to Android and iOS devices.
  • This leak also suggests that a Switch 2 version is in development.
  • All things considered, modern smartphones should be able to play the game well enough.

Widely considered to be one of Rockstar Gamesโ€™ best projects ever, Red Dead Redemption might be making its way over to more systems, including the Nintendo Switch 2 and mobile hardware on Android and iOS, itโ€™s claimed.

While the existence of a Switch 2 port is nothing surprising (after all, the first gen Nintendo Switch can play Red Dead Redemption on it pretty flawlessly), it should be mentioned here that the mobile ports are anything but, being limited by thermal design, differing architectures and a lack of interest from developers of these games.

Red Dead Redemption May Be Heading to Mobile Devices

As per a recent Tweet from X user Garrus (SrGarrus), Rockstar Games has recently nuked one of their videos, by using YouTubeโ€™s system to claim a copyright strike on the aforementioned clip.

The video was titled โ€˜Red Dead Redemption Coming to Netflix, iOS, Android, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2โ€™. What’s far more interesting than the video title itself is the fact that the content owners have been tagged as Take Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games.

Unfortunate copyright claims aside, this does more or less confirm that Rockstar Games is indeed working on a current gen port of the first Red Dead Redemption. It wouldnโ€™t make sense for them to strike against a video otherwise.

The presence of a next gen port of the game has been heavily rumored for quite some time, and also quite anticipated, given that the last gen version of Red Dead Redemption is locked to 30 FPS and is essentially the PS4/Xbox One version of the game running through backwards compatibility, with no additional patches enabled.

While the delay in porting over the game to newer systems with a high frame rate cap (among other graphical improvements) is nothing short of baffling, at least weโ€™re getting the game on newer systems.

All that remains now is for Rockstar to port over the sequel to the Nintendo Switch 2, which is more than capable of running it quite well.

Will You Be Able to Play Red Dead Redemption on Mobiles?

While it might appear unlikely at first glance, Red Dead Redemption could run perfectly fine on mobile devices. Mobile SoCs have come a long way since the days of SymbianOS and the first iPhone, and these chipsets are often as good as last gen consoles, capable of trumping them in certain cases too.

With chipsets like the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Apple A18 Pro, running Red Dead shouldnโ€™t be too much of a hassle. Of course, there will be thermal limitations (these are used in passively cooled devices, after all) so donโ€™t go expecting console parity here.

The mobile versions will likely be cut down from the original, scaling back visual detail and render resolution by a fair degree in order to compensate for the lack of cooling and sustained total power draw.

How these will perform though, remains to be seen. While Red Dead Redemption isnโ€™t a particularly new title (nor is it a super hardware intensive game), its addition will undoubtedly set the path forward for future PC only titles on mobile devices.
