Key Highlights:

  • The NieR series had a concert in New York City, on account of its 15th anniversary.
  • Series producer Yosuke Saito took to the stage to announce his hope to bring more NieR content in the future.
  • The series has seen much success, with critical acclaim to go along with it.

NieR has quickly grown to become its very own franchise, after initially originating as sort of spin off from what is considered as one of the โ€˜jokeโ€™ endings for Drakengard (2003).

The NieR series has since seen numerous releases, re-releases and remasters, but nothing compares to the release of NieR: Automata, initially released back in February 2017 for the PS4. This title single handedly propelled what was an otherwise niche series into the mainstream.

Ahead of the franchiseโ€™s 15th anniversary, a piano concert was held in New York City to commemorate the same. It’s here that a rather interesting statement was rumored to have been made, with regards to the seriesโ€™ future.

More NieR Content Rumored to Be Revealed โ€˜Soon’

According to a recent post from the developers during the NieR orchestra of New York City, the franchise is expected to be making a few important moves in the near future.

Additionally, as per multiple reports from those who had attended the concert live, series producer Yosuke Saito himself took to the stage to hint that the might be โ€˜able to keep bringingโ€™ players more NieR.

Much of this is attributed to the seriesโ€™ immense financial success, which has resulted in a multitude of ports and a mobile game in the form of NieR Reincarnation, and of course the endless amount of rightfully deserved praise from both fans and critics.

That being said, the answer is vague at best. At the very least though, we have more NieR related content in development, which could hopefully tangent off to an eventual standalone NieR game release.

Itโ€™ll probably take years before we see anything remotely close to a full blown NieR game. Iโ€™d wager a console/mobile port for NieR Reincarnation is up first though, given its popularity (and the fact that it was killed off by Square Enix in April 2024; a real shame and something that Square has been doing a lot as of late).

What Is the NieR Series?

Created by series director Yoko Taro, the NieR series of video games incorporate elements of fantasy and action adventure role playing. The series also delves heavily into the elements of science fiction and existentialism, delving into the essence of human mannerism and society.

It also has some excellent genre bending gameplay, along with some of the best original soundtracks in gaming, all of which have earned it the much well deserved status of a cult classic.

In other words, it’s a pretty darn good game, and one that every gamer (and non gamer) should try out once. Itโ€™s an experience like no other, and interestingly enough, started as a spinoff of Drakengardโ€™s Ending E.

In this particular ending, the protagonist Caim and his dragon, Angelus face off against the Queen Beast, before being suddenly pulled into modern day Tokyo (2003).

Although Caim and Angelus manage to fell the Queen, they are attacked by the Japanese missiles in a moment of panic and confusion. Their death results in the release of maso (literally magical particles) into our world, which cause a global scale pandemic, turning humans into stone pillars or murderous beasts.

From here we extend onto the future of humanity, and the arrival of sentient artificial intelligence life forms. Itโ€™s a really beautiful, complicated (and oftentimes convoluted) story that is every bit as interesting as I made it seem in those hastily written paragraphs.
