Key Highlights:

  • The live action Legend of Zelda releases in May 2027, across theaters worldwide.
  • This will be immediately followed by a release on Netflix.
  • The movie has already confirmed castings for Princess Zelda and its protagonist, Link.

The onset of a live action Zelda movie was inevitable, after the success of the Super Mario Bros movie. Nintendo wasnโ€™t going to sit idle and not capitalize on its second most important IP, and we finally have more details in the light.

Read on to learn more about the cast for the movie, its potential release date and screening details, including that of a Netflix release.

When Does the Live Action Zelda Release?

The live action, yet to be titled Legend of Zelda movie is set to released worldwide on May 27, 2026. Note that this is a projected date, and we could always see a delay to this.

Interestingly, the movie was initially slated for a March 2027 release, before being ultimately delayed to May, in order to ensure a higher quality release.

What we do know though, is that filming has already begun, starting November 2025 within New Zealand. It’s also expected to be wrapped up by April 2026, which should make it feature ready for more edits and effects later down the line.

Is The Movie Releasing On Netflix?

In a word, yes but its a bit more complicated than that. As announced within a press release last week, the teams at Sony Pictures Entertainment and Netflix reaffirmed their commitment toward a partnership.

In a part of the landmark global Pay-1 licensing deal, Sony Pictures Entertainment will retain exclusive rights to the production and distribution of the Legend of Zelda live action movie, while Netflix retains the streaming rights.

This move also bridges the gap between a movieโ€™s theatrical run and its eventual descent into a streaming platform all the more quicker. This deal also affects existing Sony movie IPs, such as the Spider-Man movies (more particularly, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse).

As for when to expect the movie, it should be out in under 3 months to Netflix, is what Iโ€™m personally guessing. Which is a pretty good thing, if you donโ€™t feel yourself inclined to head to a movie theater.

Full Confirmed Cast For the Live Action Zelda

While we donโ€™t have complete details as to the entire cast of the Legend of Zelda live action movie, we do know a few tidbits of information. As far as the actors themselves go, we have Bo Bragason as the titular Princess Zelda. Bo Bragason has previously worked for Censor (2021) and more recently, Renegade Neil (2024).

The protagonist, Link is portrayed by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth in the movie. Ainsworth is best known for his role in the Haunting of Bly Manor, a Netflix TV series, although this isnโ€™t confirmed yet.

We also have another unconfirmed leak in the form of Dichen Lachman as the Impa. Impa is a member of the mysterious and long lost Sheikah tribe, and work together to protect the princess from harm.

Dichen Lachman is best known for her work in the Apple TV series, Severance and also happens to be one of the few older actors joining in Nintendoโ€™s recent efforts to transform their IPs into movies.

Lachman is accompanied by Bob Hoskins, John Leguiuzamo and Dennis Hooper (of the original Mario movie from 1993, which was very poorly received), which should be quite an interesting lineup.
