Will Battlefield 6 be another bad sequel after the Battlefield V fiasco?
Battlefield V, launched in 2018, was a major disappointment for fans and gamers. Despite its World II based setting, a beloved theme in the franchise, the game suffered from poor marketing, rushed development, and unmet expectations. This resulted in low sales and player retention.
The previous part of the game attracted controversy since its trailer, which featured unrealistic elements like a female soldier with a prosthetic arm. This sparked anger into fans who wanted historical accuracy. Additionally, EA’s response, telling critics to “accept it or don’t buy it”, made things worse.
Many people also pointed out its rushed development. With just 18 months of development, the game launched unfinished with missing features like the Firestorm battle royale mode. At launch, it had fewer maps and modes than previous games. Iconic WWII battles and factions like the Soviets were also absent.
Updates with turtle-speed were another major problem in the game. The live-service model was too slow, frustrating players who expected regular new content.
Fans on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) criticized the game’s “cartoonish-style” with lack of depth. Many quit this new title within months. DICE admitted mistakes, saying they failed to understand fan’s expectations for historical accuracy.
EA’s CEO later called Battlefield V a sales flop, blaming poor marketing and rushed development.
However, EA appears to have taken meaningful lessons from Battlefield V’s failures, which implements key improvements for Battlefield 6. Unlike the rushed 18-month development cycle that plagued BFV, DICE has spent over 3 years crafting this installment. This is a crucial difference that should result in a more polished product.
