Key highlights:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 is teasing something major for Thursday, September 4.
  • The chances of this being a playtest for a mobile game are high, but it could also be an upcoming DLC.
  • The teaser is designed as a message from the President of the fictional N.U.S.A, and calls for a recruitment, which suggests that it could be some sort of a play test.

For a game that had a disastrous release back in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has significantly improved its offering, in what is one of the most significant redemption arcs in the gaming world. CDPR is still supporting the title, with regular content updates and features.

While the developers haven’t exactly spoken about an upcoming DLC, they’re heavily teasing something that they’re set to announce on Thursday, September 4, 2025. There are a few ways in which this could go, but no matter what happens, it does have something to do with the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and goes on to show how invested the developers are in their own game.

Something Major Is Going To Happen in Cyberpunk 2077

Via a tweet, in-game President Rosalind Myers had an important message for all the citizens of N.U.S.A. This message talked about a growing cybersecurity threat, from individuals who strike from the shadows. The President further said that she needed brave netrunners to join the efforts to cull these threats for good. These netrunners were required to pass a recruitment test to join the program.

While this is a basic summary of the statement made, the message is a bit cryptic. First of all, since it’s coming from Rosalind Myers, whatever the big reveal is, has something to do with the Cyberpunk 2077 universe at large. Now, since they’re talking about a recruitment test, it could be some sort of a playtest. Since the sequel to the game is nowhere on the horizon, there’s little chance that this playtest would be related to that.

Alternatively, there’s also a possibility that this playtest would be regarding a mobile game that the company has been working on. Back in the day, CDPR did express a lot of interest in making mobile games. With Cyberpunk 2077 largely successful at this point, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the developers making a mobile game set in the same universe.

Finally, although the potential of this is bleak, this could also be a new teaser for an upcoming DLC. Don’t expect it to drop on September 4, because that would be absolute suicide, since the Hollow Knight: Silksong drops on the same date. Also, it’s extremely rare to see developers drop new DLCs without any prior promotion. If it’s a free DLC then it shouldn’t be an issue. However, if it’s something that players need to buy, then the chances of them releasing the said DLC right now isn’t happening.

Cyberpunk 2077 Has Made Significant Improvements With the Past Few Updates

Over the years, Cyberpunk 2077 has received some significant updates, including a major DLC titled Phantom Liberty, featuring Idris Elba. What used to be a buggy mess back in the day, turned into one of the most refined AAA experiences of all time, with an amazing storyline to boot. CDPR has been dedicated to improving the game, and kept on with the constant updates, which ensured that the experience that it provides, is top notch. The only other game to have a similar trajectory is No Man’s Sky. Just like this RPG, the space exploration title from Hello Games was a massive flop at launch.

Over the years however, it improved and has turned into a much-loved title with a dedicated fan base. With each free update, the game continues to see a spike in player count, which goes on to show how supportive the community is. However, while the developers were working on fixing the game, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, an anime series set in the same universe, was responsible for generating renewed interest in the game.

Had it not been for the series, the developers would have had a difficult time bringing players back to their futuristic RPG, despite having improved the overall experience that it provided. So, Cyberpunk 2077 does have an elaborate universe already, and the developers have a shot at expanding it with their announcement on September 4.
