  • Activision announces end of support for Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One.
  • How will affect many fans and players and what they can do to carry over their saved data.
  • Call of Duty: Warzone support ends on 23rd October for PS4 and Xbox One.

The shutdown will coincide with the launch of Modern Warfare 4โ€™s first season of content later this year, Activision announced. Modern Warfare 4 is set to be the first modern Call of Duty game released only for current-gen consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S), and thus support is being removed from older platforms.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Call of Duty: Warzone are shutting down. Call of Duty: Warzone was released in 2020 and was massively successful during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game took the concept of a Call of Duty BR to new heights and is quite easily one of the most popular battle royale games ever made.

Call of Duty: Warzone is Ditching PS4 and Xbox One

The next big controversial Call of Duty: Warzone change is right around the corner. It’s been confirmed by Activision that Call of Duty: Warzone will be removed from download on PS4 and Xbox One starting June 4. The game will remain playable on PS4 and Xbox One until the start of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1. A specific start date for Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 has yet to be revealed, but we do know that the game launches on October 23, so PS4 and Xbox One gamers can expect to lose access to Warzone before the end of the year, likely late October or early November.

โ€œAs part of this transition, Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will no longer be playable starting with Season 1,โ€ said Activision in a newly posted blog. โ€œBeginning June 4, the game will no longer be available for new downloads on those platforms, though existing players can continue playing until Season 1 launches. Certain items, such as Call of Duty Points bundle purchases, will no longer be available on those platforms.โ€

Activision says that on June 25, Call of Duty: Warzoneโ€˜s in-game store on PS4 and Xbox One will close. And then at some unspecified point shortly after MW4 launches on October 23 and Season 1 starts, Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will shut down and become completely unplayable.

Why This Is A Big Deal For Many And What Players Can Do To Save Their Progress

Even though the PS4 and Xbox One are 13 years old at this point, there are still millions of gamers that use them as their primary consoles and have yet to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for whatever reason. And with video game consoles becoming more expensive than ever before, it may be especially frustrating for Call of Duty: Warzone players still on PS4 and Xbox One that they will be losing access to the game.

Players who have properly linked their platform accounts to their Activision accounts will be able to keep all their progress and unlocks once they leap to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC. Activision also confirmed on its support site that all past Call of Dutygames will remain playable online on PS4 and Xbox One.

Wrapping Up

Warzone can start taking full advantage of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware and not be held back by the limitations of the PS4 and Xbox One. Warzone ditching PS4 and Xbox One is coinciding with Call of Duty itself finally moving on from the older hardware, with Modern Warfare 4 also skipping last-gen consoles. We’re six years deep into the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S era, so for many fans, seeing Call of Duty fully embrace the newer consoles is something that has been a long time coming.

Still, those that have yet to upgrade from PS4 and Xbox One will be disappointed. Various other live-service games have announced plans to move on from the PS4 and Xbox One, and Sony itself has confirmed that PS4 is no longer a priority for PlayStation Plus. The PS4 had an incredible run and a level of longevity that is virtually unprecedented, but it’s definitely time for the industry to fully focus on the PS5 and other newer platforms. It will definitely be interesting to see how Warzone and Call of Duty evolve with the PS4 left in the past.
