- SNK changes to celebrate its 30th anniversary with a new look.
A 30th anniversary website for Metal Slug has just gone live, and it teases multiple new projects that aim to bring back the series through Mission Reboot.
Is SNK Finally Dropping A New Metal Slug Title In The Series
Over the past few years, SNK has been making a clear push to bring back some of its legacy franchises, including King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, and even Samurai Showdown a little while back. That includes what I would call its standout series, which recently came back into the spotlight with Metal Slug Tactics. Metal Slugโs more than just another retro franchise. Itโs the gold standard for arcade shooters. Every frame of animation was hand-drawn. Every weapon felt different. Every boss fight demanded perfect pattern recognition and lightning reflexes. The gaming community caught wind of SNKโs announcement and the response has been immediate.

Fans are already speculating about what a modern Metal Slug could look like. The series has always pushed visual boundaries. Hand drawn sprites that still look better than most modern games. Fluid animation that makes every movement feel precise. The timing isnโt accidental. SNK has been on a revival streak. The King of Fighters XV proved they still understand competitive fighting games. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is coming. Now Metal Slug gets its moment. But not everyoneโs convinced a new Metal Slug is what the world needs. Modern game development has a way of over-complicating things. The original series worked because it was pure. Point and shoot. Donโt die. Simple controls hiding serious mechanical depth.

Metal Slugโs legacy runs deeper than nostalgia. It proved arcade gaming could be art. Every pixel was placed with purpose. Every sound effect was carefully tuned. The series influenced a generation of indie developers who still chase that level of craftsmanship. The run-and-gun genre needs Metal Slug back. Modern shooters focus on online multiplayer and complex progression systems. Metal Slug was about pure skill. Learn the patterns. Master the timing. Simple. Co-op was built into the series DNA. Two players on screen, sharing lives and ammunition. No voice chat needed, just pointing and shooting in perfect sync, that kind of local multiplayer is rare now.
As great as Tactics was, though, it’s a very different type of game than the rest of the series, and didn’t give us the run-and-gun goodness that Metal Slug is known for. In fact, if you don’t count remakes, compilations, and phone games, it’s been nearly 20 years since we got a traditional mainline Metal Slug game, which looks to change in the near future.
SNK Is Teasing Multiple Metal Slug Projects For Its 30th Anniversary
2026 marks the 30th anniversary of Metal Slug and, SNK has celebrated that milestone by launching a 30th anniversary website. That website not only celebrates the series and its many games across the last three decades, but also teases some big news for its future.

A “special” trailer was released alongside the anniversary website going live, and it ends by showing a dusty arcade cabinet coming to life with the words “Mission Reboot” displayed. As if that wasn’t a clear enough tease that we’re getting a new Metal Slug, another message pops up after saying “A New Mission Awaits”.
The website goes into a bit more detail on what we can expect from Mission Reboot, as SNK says that it is “reigniting and rebooting the series” with multiple projects, including “new ventures in gaming”. That could mean anything from a new spin-off like Tactics to the long-awaited new mainline entry. Whatever the case, it’s clear that Metal Slug is coming back in a big way.
