Many players and fans alike were excited for the new game releases with Sonyโs State Of Play event. With back-to-back announcements of new games and sequel titles and fans immediately picked up upon the hearing the God Of War theme song.
While not many anticipated the sudden shadow drop for God Of War Laufey yet, here we are with a new title in the series, this time allowing players to play as Kratosโ second wife, Faye, and experience the afterlife story.
Original God Of War Creator Reaction To Laufey
David Jaffe, creator of the original God Of War back in 2005, has criticized the reveal of God Of War Laufey during the live stream of the State of Play event, highlighting how players step into the shoes of Kratoโs wife and battles other Gods.
David Jaffe livestreamed his reaction to the State of Play, and he described God Of War Laufey as โso uninspired and it looks so dull,โ moving on to say โthat he has no knowledge about this as he was not part of this series for over a decade now, but it feels that it has now become a producers’ studio and this game feels rushed or forced.โ Though many games often start off with a slower pace to establish characters and settings, as seen in the recent release of 007 First Light, David Jaffe continues on, saying, โItโs dead and is not going to do well for what they expect it to do.โ
And moving on to discussing how the classic God Of War games succeeded because of the hooks: โGod Of War the original had its hooks, right? It was that Kratos is a badass, with Greek mythology, violence, etc. And then, it wore out its welcome. Cory (current game director and writer for God Of War) came along with the brilliant idea of evolving it, and that was awesome for 2018. I loved the game. Then you get Ragnarok, which felt like it was running out of gas, and now, yeah.โ The hook argument is that currently โKratos is too soft,โ praise for the older 2018 game notwithstanding.

Ultimately, Jaffe stated that God Of War Laufey does not resemble a traditional God Of War experience, even comparing it to the game Forspoken and saying, โThis is not God Of War, I donโt know what the f*ck this is. This is like some fantasy novelโฆ If they had taken God Of War off the title, and you didnโt know the God Of War story and there wasnโt Kratos, it was just a story about this goddess who dies, you would not be talking about this gameโฆ Iโll probably play it for the stream, but if it wasnโt for that, Iโd have no interest in playing that game.โ
Itโs worth noting that it was well established that Kratos loved Faye for her strength, and it would be impossible to know this about her just from the modern God Of War story.

Players Take On The Sudden SAhift Of Kratos Behaviour Over The Years As Soft. ( place holder)
Player reactions to Kratos becoming “soft” vary, as many fans view his patience with Atreus as earned, that he is actively trying to break a generational cycle of toxic godly behavior. They see it not as weakness, but as Kratos mastering his own monstrous rage. While many opinions are highly divided on Atreus’s development as players find his teenage arrogance after discovering he is a god to be annoying. And some feel this attitude was realistic and grounded, others found it frustrating to sit through.
The sentiment regarding playing as Atreus is highly debated, since some gamers love his combo versatility, while others find it tedious. Many returning players shared that they desperately wanted those chapters to end so they could return to playing as Kratos.

And this time again, the fanbase has been divided. As many are excited for her acrobatic combat and deeper lore, others are frustrated by the lack of Kratos and are debating new character designs. Fans praise the new Faye’s fast-paced, highly mobile, and acrobatic fighting style.

Many are thrilled to finally step into the shoes of the legendary warrior giant herself to explore her history and the Norse afterlife. However, a part of the fanbase is upset that a mainline God of War entry is not focused on Kratos, with some players rejecting the departure from the series’ traditional formula.
