Riot Games has sent fans shocked through the community with a new social media teaser on Valorant’s X handle. The post features an audio log where Viper can be heard giving a message regarding Sage: “We put her down.”

This dramatic new teaser, building upon the earlier tagline – “She’s finally at her limit. Now we move,” hinting at a turning point for one of the game’s original and most beloved Sentinel agents. This narrative would allow Riot to smoothly transition Sage out of the current meta, and use it to modify her abilities. The developers are also dropping hints towards setting a lore foundation which is aligned to sage’s gameplay rework in the future.

Sage’s Cost of Resurrection And Why Viper May Want To ‘Put Her Down’

Over the course of Valorant’s history, Sage has served as the ultimate protective pillar for the Valorant Protocol. However, her ability to control life comes with a cost. Sage channels her power orbs of pure through crystallized radianite. For years, she has pushed past her safe physical limits to resurrect fallen agents on the battlefield.

This dangerous overextension causes raw radianite to backfire into her own body, initiating a painful process called radianite crystallization. What started as subtle visual hints during the “Why We Fight” cinematic, where Sage visibly struggled and felt intense pain while resurrecting Killjoy and now has escalated into a full-blown medical crisis. Each time Sage casts her ultimate, her infection increases exponentially. Following a fight on Icebox to bring back Omen, her body’s crystallization rate spiked to a critical point, with jade crystals breaking through her skin and spreading across her face and hands.

It is likely that this is why Viper is now targeting Sage with the command to “put her down.” Viper’s anger comes from the history between the two scientists. Lore details reveal that Viper and Sage have known each other since before the formation of the Protocol, and Viper holds a massive grudge over a past failure. Long ago, Viper brought Omen to Sage, begging her to use resurrection powers to save him. Sage failed, leaving Omen in his current phantom state, a tragedy for which Viper has never forgiven Sage.

New Sage In-Game Changes & What Fans Think About Her Rework

Riot Games has already started taking steps to change Sageโ€™s physical appearance directly into the live game. This officially began with Valorant Patch 12.05. Developers permanently modified Sage’s in-game 3D player model, character selection key art, and UI icons. Players loading into matches can now actively see sharp, jagged jade-like radianite crystals growing, breaking through her skin, spreading across her face and hands. As a constant reminder for the toll of using her abilities.

All these changes come in with the launch of Valorant’s sound-manipulating Controller agent, Miks. The introduction of Miks brought a fundamental rewrite to the game’s targeting system. Because Miks features a dynamic projectile kit that can either heal allies or concuss enemies, Riot completely modernized the game’s support class UI and HUD systems. To ensure consistency across the agent pool, Sage received these exact same mechanical upgrades. Her old, clunky healing system was completely replaced with a brand-new ally targeting a widget above her teammates’ heads and a new model outline highlight, significantly making it easier for players to use her utility during gunfights in rounds.

These visual and UI upgrades have convinced many players and fans that Riot is hinting for a total ability rework for Sage. This speculation has divided the players with one side that doesn’t want a sage rework as traditional support players arguing to keep her kit exactly as it is.

Some fans are in complete support of the rework and even suggest their take on what can be added. Players who are tired of the “pocket healer” dynamic have posted detailed alternative mechanics that can be changed or added.
