Key Highlights:
- The PS6 might release within the next two years, its rumored.

- The console will regardless be a tough sell for existing customers.
As the ongoing console generation reaches its final few years, game console manufacturers are beginning to share their visions of the future, and Sony recently unveiled its plans for a PlayStation 6 in a recent cryptic video with Mark Cerny and AMDโs Jack Huynh, working together.
Rumors even point to a release within the next 2-3 years, but all things considered, the PS6 is shaping out to be a really, really tough sell for most players. There are a lot of factors contributing to the same, but none so blatantly obvious as the real lack of exclusive titles and miniscule generational improvements.
PlayStation 6 Expected to Release in 2027 at Earliest
PlayStationโs upcoming โProject Amethystโ received a major discussion in a rather lengthy 8 minute long video. The video went onto detail on the future of PlayStation, and of the upcoming console generation that uses AMD tech to deliver cutting edge visuals and immersiveness.
While the video never really mentions the estimated release date (or even the presence of a PS6, for that matter), well known leaker KeplerL2 has already shared a few interesting tidbits of information on the same.
According to KeplerL2โs recent comments on the NeoGAF forum, the Sony PlayStation 6 console is expected to be released sometime in 2027. Apparently, this is not an estimated date, as Sony appears to have already finalized the release window.
That being said, there may always be unforeseen delays and the like, on account of current world affairs that could very well delay the release to 2028 or beyond instead.
Given KeplerL2โs track record of reporting accurate โleaksโ, this does seem quite plausible, although only time will really tell.
Console Gaming Is Dying
The PS6 release is going to generate far less buzz than one would expect. After all, the last PlayStation console that truly pushed boundaries in technological advancements and gameplay presentation was the PS4, which was released way back in November 2013.
Twelve years later, and the PS4 is still going strong, receiving updates and ports of current gen only titles, such as Resident Evil 4 (remake) and more. Itโs truly a remarkable piece of hardware, and one that has stood the test of time.
If anything though, this proves that video game tech has peaked and will continue to remain unimpressive for a while.
While the PS5 represents a sizable jump in performance over the PS4, its existing library of games is quite disappointing to say the least. There have no doubt been some good titles (such as the very recent Ghost of Yotei), but these are far and few inbetween.

To make matters worse, all of PlayStationโs modern releases eventually make their way onto the PC (and now, even the Xbox!) which significantly reduces the value proposition of the console. A PC can simply do a lot more for the same price, despite its many quirks.
Most PS5 system sellers turned out to be remastered versions of existing PS4 titles, which was also quite disappointing.
With the PS5 losing relevance, the PS6 is bound to suffer a much worse fate. If anything, this could be the first PlayStation console that most gamers skip over. The PS5 is far from being obsolete, and should enjoy a few more years of support from game developers.
Thereโs little reason to get a PS6 when you can most likely grab a PS5 for far cheaper, and have a similar experience. Until Sony actively pushes the PS5 out of service, that is.
