Key Highlights:
- Half-Life 3 could release by the end of 2026, it is heavily rumored.
- Much like Half-Life Alyx, a new Half-Life game may be released with the Steam Machine.
- The game could also be revealed during the 2025 Game Awards.
To say that Half-Life 3 is one of the most anticipated sequels would be quite an understatement. Valveโs flagship video game franchise peaked back in November, 2004 with the release of the second entry and has managed to cement itself as one of the definitive games for PC, leaving a lasting legacy.
Half-Life 3 has grown to become somewhat of an urban legend in video games since then, with many leaks pointing to its development in recent years. However, the most recent of these leaks seem to suggest that we might have both a trailer and a playable build released sometime by the end of 2026.
Recent Leaks Seem to Suggest That Valve Isnโt Done Announcing New Stuff Yet
According to multiple, reputed leakers, Valve isnโt content with sticking to only hardware related releases. The PC giant recently announced a trifecta of gaming oriented devices, including a VR headset that seems to grind its competitors into a sorry state.
The company might be set to reveal a new Half-Life game to the world sometime by the end of 2026, or so it’s rumored. After all, the Half-Life franchise is slowly approaching its anniversary on November 19, 2025 which would make it a perfect time to reveal the next Half-Life game.

Interestingly, rumors seem to point at Half-Life X (HLX) being the next game, which may or may not be Half-Life 3. If anything, it is suspected to be a spin off of the mainline Half-Life series, much similar to the excellent (albeit VR only Half-Life Alyx).

While it may be wishful thinking, many anticipate that Valve could be gearing up for an official announcement at this yearโs Game Awards. Maybe Geoff has a few surprises lined for us, much like that reveal of Resident Evil 9: Requiem last year, rigth at the end.
This Would Be a Perfect Steam Machine Launch Title
Fans might remember that Half-Life Alyx, a VR only Half-Life title, was developed for Valveโs Index VR headset in mind. The game was a phenomenal success, and proved that despite their long absence, Valve still had it in them to create an amazing title that pushed forward the boundaries of the medium, helping innovate it further.
While the release of the game was delayed until 2020 (around a year after the release of the Index in 2019), it was meant as a killer app for the hardware which it most certainly succeeded in doing. Alyx is considered as one of the best VR games out there, and perhaps one of the few reasons for owning a VR headset.
With the release of Valveโs upcoming Steam Machine gaming PCs, we should hope for a monumental shift back toward first person shooter gameplay, with less of an emphasis on VR this time around. Although, with the release of the Steam Frame, this could change things a bit.
It would also be the perfect companion app for the Steam Machine, and a great way to showcase its excellent, capable hardware in action. The timing coincides perfectly with the 2026 release of the console, and we could very well have Half-Life 3 (or HLX) released by the end of next year.
Or so it is hoped. Half-Life 3 is most certainly in development, and it is only a matter of time before it gets released.
