Battlefield 6 is partnering up with the Top Gun movie franchise for a big multiplayer event, arriving August 18, 2026. It is combining jet-focused warfare, a redeveloped classic map and new crossover cosmetics. But the bigger surprise is that EA is also opening the game up for a free week. The offer comes with an important catch, that is, the trial is limited and only covers the game’s multiplayer. Players will be able to hop into the game without buying it during the limited timeline, while progression earned during the trial will transfer if they later buy the full version. The free week also gives new players a chance to try the tie-up content alongside the Season 4 mid-season update.
Why Is Battlefield 6 Going Free for a Week?
The free trial starts August 18, 2026, and runs through August 25, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Players will be able to access Battlefield 6 multiplayer without buying the full game during that window. The trial content runs through the free-to-play Battlefield REDSEC client, so anyone interested should keep it installed and updated. However, once the period ends, players will need to purchase the full game to continue playing the multiplayer experience. Progress earned during the free week will carry over to the full version. This indicates the players who decide to purchase the game afterwards will not have to start over.

There is another distinction. REDSEC, Battlefield 6’s Battle Royale mode, is permanently free-to-play and is not part of the limited-time offer. The free trial comes alongside the mid-season update for Season 4, which started on July 21. The change heavily emphasizes naval and aerial warfare, giving players multiple new routes to take part in large-scale battles.
What Does the Top Gun Tie-Up Bring to Battlefield 6?
The Top Gun tie-up launches August 18 with new multiplayer experiences created around aerial combat and large-scale land and sea battles. One of the largest additions is Carrier Strike, where players fight across a rebuilt Wake Island while trying to destroy the opposing team’s aircraft carrier. The mode revives Battlefield 4’s Carrier Assault, which itself descended from Titan mode in 2006’s Battlefield 2142. The shift also introduces Gauntlet Fighter Sweep, a jets-only experience based on the Tsuru Reef ecosystem. Players will compete in dogfights using two-seater fighter jets while also engaging ground targets with novel air-to-ground weapons.
Two new aircraft are being launched with the update: the F/A-81F Super Spectre and the F-74A Seacat. They are the first two-seat jets in the series since Battlefield 2.. The shift also adds the Desert Tech HT1 sniper rifle. Wake Island is another major addition, returning as a rebuilt version of a map that first appeared in Battlefield 1942. The map has been updated for the existing game while retaining elements of its Battlefield V version. It is created around intense battle across land and sea, with an aircraft carrier as the main base for the army. The tie-up also brings characters inspired by Top Gun: Maverick. Players can acquire cosmetics based on Lieutenant Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw, Lieutenant Robert ‘Bob’ Floyd, and Admiral Solomon ‘Warlock’ Bates, portrayed by Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman, and Charles Parnell. Players will be able to acquire Top Gun-themed pilot cosmetics and play into the roles of the familiar characters, although there is one obvious omission. Tom Cruise is not a part of the crossovers. The Battlefield 6 and Top Gun event will run from August 18 through September 15.
The update also adds a new point of interest on Fort Lyndon in Battle Royale, plus Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode arriving through Battlefield Labs in Live. Wake Island will be available for Verified Experiences first, with Custom Experiences following later in the season.
Alongside the tie-up content, Ranked Play is launching in REDSEC’s Battle Royale Quads. For players who’ve been waiting to try Battlefield 6, August 18 offers an easy way into the full multiplayer experience. But the catch is clear. The free access is only for a week. After August 25, players will need to buy the game to continue their multiplayer progression, while REDSEC remains the permanently free-to-play option.
