New CS2 Animation Update Explained

  • All player animations changed in 3rd person view
  • Improved performance with less network and CPU usage
  • Multiple other bug fixes and overall gameplay improvements

Valve has just dropped another CS2 patch update on 2 April after its last update on 19 March where Valve completely changed the reload mechanics of the guns, resulting in a sudden change to how players take gunfights. The new update which seemed to majority of players as just an April fools joke from the developers end, but turned out to be wrong.

In this new update CS2 has undergone a complete change to all player-model animations in the game. Here’s what’s new and changed in the game.

Animgraph 2 Beta

Animgraph 2 is what Valve has named their new animation system. Players should note that it is still in a beta phase so players might encounter some bugs here and there, which is to be expected. This update reduces the CPU and networking costs associated with animation. Along with the technical work involved in switching to the new system, all third person animations have been changed and in many cases were adjusted in response to player feedback.

Players who wish to get their hands on the new update can opt into the beta build by following the instructions below.

To opt into beta depots:

  1. Open the Steam client and navigate to your Library.
  2. From the Counter-Strike 2 page, open the Properties window from the Manage menu.
  3. Select the Betas tab.
  4. Select the beta you would like to opt into.
  5. Launch Counter-Strike 2 to play the game with its Beta changes.

(Note that you will not be able to connect to Valve servers while you are using the beta build.)

Performance Improvement

With the new animation changes, players seemingly have a very positive feedback towards the new update as to how smooth the game looks and feels now. Some fans even took to Reddit, sharing that they experienced a jump of 100-200 fps. This should help gamers with older hardware, who were struggling to get a consistent performance during their games and help then having a much better gaming experience for them.

The update will also change how players peek around the corners and hold angles, as now the the characters feel more responsive when jiggle-peeking. Moreover, holding an angle should also be different now that the character model is more accurate in terms of height and it should be seen to other players while we crouch or hold down a narrow angle.
