The head of the world’s largest game streaming platform has put a year on Grand Theft Auto 6’s multiplayer component, even though Rockstar Games has never confirmed one exists. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, speaking around Tokyo Game Show, said he expects the online mode to arrive in 2027, roughly twelve months after the main game.
Clancy said Twitch had spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about the studio’s plans, and about how Rockstar might work with Twitch creators around the launch. He then said the platform would see a big bump from GTA 6 itself, followed by “an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.” The remarks came in an interview with Bloomberg published on September 17, reported by Takashi Mochizuki and Shery Ahn.
What Dan Clancy Said About GTA 6 Online In 2027
Most of the interview was not about multiplayer at all. Clancy’s main argument was that other studios are right to steer clear of GTA 6 this holiday season, and he said publishers appear to be either shipping their big releases in October or waiting until the noise dies down. He expects that noise to run into January.
On viewership, he said GTA 6 would spike Twitch’s overall numbers meaningfully, while admitting he had no idea by how much, and that it would pull back lapsed users who have not opened the site in a while. Clancy added that in his seven years running Twitch, nothing has come close to this level of pre-launch anticipation.
Why Rockstar Has Not Confirmed A GTA 6 Online Release Date
Rockstar has said repeatedly that GTA 6 is a single-player title at launch, and it has not acknowledged that a successor to GTA Online exists in any form. Take-Two has said it will keep supporting the current GTA Online after GTA 6 arrives and beyond. Strauss Zelnick has pointed to NBA 2K Online in China as the template, noting that the company launched the original in 2012 and a sequel version in 2017 while continuing to serve players on the older product.

The delay itself would break with how Rockstar has handled this before. GTA Online went live on October 1, 2013, which was just two weeks after GTA 5 shipped. Red Dead Redemption 2 however, took longer, opening an online beta about a month after launch and reaching a full release the following year. A gap of a full year would be the widest the studio has left between a campaign and its online counterpart. Court filings surfaced earlier have also been read as pointing to 32-player lobbies for the new mode, though none of that has been confirmed by Rockstar.

What GTA 6 Online Means For Twitch Against Kick
Clancy has a specific problem that GTA 6 would solve. GTA 5 has been sliding as a Twitch category through 2026, generating around 50.5 million hours watched in July 2026 against 70.6 million in July 2025, per TwitchTracker figures compiled by Statista. Streams Charts puts the same July at roughly 49.5 million hours with average viewers down from 94.8K to 68.6K year on year.
Kick first overtook Twitch on GTA hours watched in summer 2025 and pulled clearly ahead in April 2026, helped by creator moves including Brazilian streamer PaulinhoLOKObr, who shifted almost entirely to Kick from May. GTA 5 still ranked third among Twitch categories in the first half of 2026 with 362.2 million hours watched.
