Sony’s rumoured next-generation PlayStation handheld, codenamed Canis, could outperform the Xbox Series S in some areas, according to leakers. According to leakers KeplerL2 and Moore’s Law Is Dead, it could launch alongside the PS6 in late 2027 with 24GB of RAM, AMD’s Zen 6c cores and RDNA 5 graphics. It would reportedly support a TV mode through a separate dock that raises GPU clocks in docked mode. Verify the 37.5% figure. However, the alleged $699 price, excluding the dock, could make the device a costly venture.
What Could Power the PS6 Handheld, Canis?
MLID’s spec sheet describes a custom AMD chip with four Zen 6c cores, two low-power Zen 6 cores and 16 RDNA 5 compute units, with only the four Zen 6c cores available to games. The device is also said to incorporate 24GB of LPDDR5X memory adjoined through a 192-bit bus. KeplerL2 claims the GPU could slightly beat the Xbox Series S in rasterisation, with a larger lead in ray tracing. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S uses 20 RDNA 2 compute units and is officially rated at 4 TFLOPS of GPU performance.
The difference does not come down only to compute units. The newer RDNA 5 architecture would give it an edge in ray tracing and efficiency. The handheld would use an updated version of Sony’s PSSR upscaling. KeplerL2 has claimed that version could surpass NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5, though that is an unverified claim. Future version naming such as PSSR3 remains unclear, since Sony does not officially call the current PS5 Pro version PSSR2.

When Could the PS Handheld Launch and How Much Could It Cost?
KeplerL2 reportedly expects Sony’s new handheld to roll out alongside the PS6 in late 2027. If precise, this would help Sony succeed Valve’s new Steam Deck.Valve had reportedly been targeting 2028 for Steam Deck 2, meaning Sony’s device could beat it to market, assuming both timelines hold . As per VideoCardz, it was hinted that Valve had been projecting 2028 for Steam Deck 2. Although present memory and NAND supply conditions could lead to a delay in the roll out. The expected price could lead to one of the major drawbacks. The handheld is rumored to cost around $699, with the dock as a standalone product. That would position it substantially above the price range associated with mainstream handheld devices. This would also justify the premium hardware choice embedded in the device.
There has also been conjecture adjoining Sony’s recent PS5 Power Saving Mode with its reported portable project. However, Digital Foundry analysts allegedly concluded that the two projects are distinct engineering programs. PS5 Power Saving features were developed for practical and governance reasons, including stringent European power consumption requirements. Some of the power management solutions would probably deem useful for future compact hardware, but do not necessarily hint that Sony is preparing the PS6 handheld through the PS5 feature.

As of now, Sony has not officially confirmed the rumored handheld, its specifications, cost, or release date. The reported late 2027 launch, 24 GB memory, RDNA 5 GPU, and 37.5% top performance boost are under speculation. If the claims prove precise, however, Sony could be preparing one of the most high-end dedicated handheld gaming devices yet.
