Former PlayStation Boss Says Sonyโ€™s PC Strategy Wasn’t Aimed at Profit

For years, PlayStation has maintained a platform exclusive strategy with their releases. Although most of their popular games make it to PC, it only happens years after their initial PS5 launch.

While this does maintain their platform exclusivity bit, it ruins the hype by the time it reaches to the PC, because spoilers surrounding these games are already available in the market. However, former PlayStation boss, Shawn Layden shed light on the thought behind this strategy. He also went on to suggest that the entire motive wasnโ€™t a money-fuelled decision.

Former PlayStation Boss Feels Sony Shouldnโ€™t Stop Selling PS Exclusives on PC

While speaking to PSI, Shawn Layden defended Sonyโ€™s multiplatform strategy so far. He exclaimed that most individuals who own PCs, would never buy a PlayStation. So, releasing these games on PC at a later date would help the publisher reach a wider audience base.

With Sony recently trying to pivot to a single platform strategy, they could abandon a considerable amount of their player base, because not everyone is on a PlayStation console. To make things worse, the global AI race has drastically increased the prices for storage and memory devices, which have caused console prices to go up. Itโ€™s also believed that the PlayStation 6 will reach prices above $1000.

In such an event, if Sony does shift to a single platform strategy, they might stand to isolate themselves from their playerbase. This is a financial concern mostly, because console games are a bit more expensive than their PC variants. Shawn Layden also criticized individuals who believed that PC releases hurt the console business.

He said, โ€œI love how everyone online is a marketing/business analyst and darn near a part-time psychologist that understands the ins and outs of consumer spending and purchasing habits better than billion-dollar organizations.โ€

However, the only problem with PlayStationโ€™s multiplatform strategy is their timeline. Since most of the games are story-driven single-player experiences, they tend to be spoiler heavy. In such scenarios, a PC release that comes after years, loses all the hype by the time it reaches the customers. This holds true for many releases, but it has a few exceptions, and the GTA franchise is one such exception.

GTA 6 Will Launch on PC Later, But Interest Isnโ€™t Likely to Wane At All

Grand Theft Auto 6 is a unique game set to release later this year. Itโ€™s been in development for quite a while now and is by far the most anticipated and biggest release of 2026. In true GTA fashion, the game will hit consoles before it reaches PC. Although the PC release date is still unknown, Rockstar isnโ€™t going to miss out on this platform at all. Additionally, since itโ€™s such a popular release, they might not wait for too long either, as they did with Grand Theft Auto V.

Yes, this game is a story-driven open-world experience, but that wonโ€™t change a thing. With GTA, Rockstar usually brings a huge open world, where players can do whatever they want. The world is littered with side-quests that you can partake in at your leisure. So, even if the story spoilers are out there, no one would be bothered too much about it, because the primary attraction of this piece is the sense of freedom that it brings to the table.

While GTA represents one side of the issue, the other side is represented by games like Marvelโ€™s Wolverine. Although Sony hasnโ€™t explicitly mentioned it yet, itโ€™s worth seeing whether the company decides to introduce its single-platform strategy before this game releases, and how the entire community perceives it.
