Xbox is rolling out a new disc-to-digital feature that lets players turn supported physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games into digital entitlements. Testing for this starts with Xbox Insiders on August 31. Microsoft says thousands of titles will be supported at launch, with more added over time. This gives players a way to keep enjoying their physical games but also unlock digital access and features when available.
The timing has drawn attention to Project Helix, the codename for the next Xbox. Microsoft hasn’t said if Helix will only support digital games or if it’ll have a disc drive. Still, this new feature clearly makes it easier to bring physical game collections into a future Xbox ecosystem, where digital access might be more important.
Why Project Helix Makes This Matter
Players claim an entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. The disc continues to work exactly as before.
This feature is about adding flexibility to physical game collections. Supported games can take advantage of things like Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, though it depends on each title. Some physical games, once converted, might become playable on PC or streamable through the cloud.
Reports suggest Helix may ship without a disc drive, though Microsoft has not confirmed this. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who succeeded Phil Spencer in February, has not addressed the question.
If the next Xbox doesn’t include a disc drive, this feature gives people a way to carry over their physical libraries. Instead of being stuck with games that only work on older consoles, players can turn supported discs into digital entitlements and keep playing through the digital Xbox ecosystem. Microsoft framed the feature as part of a broader commitment to game preservation, saying that preserving access to the games people own matters more as technology and distribution evolve.
What Players Need to Do to Claim a Digital Entitlement
At first, only Xbox Insiders will get access, not everyone. Testing starts August 31, but there’s no information yet on when it’ll roll out to all users. If you want to test it, join the Xbox Insider Program through the Xbox Insider Hub. Once you have access, use a supported Xbox One or Series X physical game.
Not every disc qualifies. Reporting from The Verge in July indicated original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs would not be included at launch. The entitlement stays tied to the disc. If the disc is used on another console or another Xbox profile, the original claimant loses access, which prevents players from claiming an entitlement and then reselling the disc.

What Xbox Collectors Gain and Lose
For anyone building a physical collection, this means more flexibility. Now, a supported disc can stay part of your physical shelf, but you also get digital access. No need to choose between physical collection and modern digital features. The value grows if future consoles drop disc drives, since entitlements would carry libraries forward.
That said, don’t expect your whole collection to go digital right away. Support varies by title, and the program is mainly aimed at Xbox One and Series X discs for now. For physical game owners, this announcement offers a way to keep existing collections while unlocking more options inside Xbox’s digital ecosystem. For Microsoft, it’s a step toward bridging the gap between today’s physical libraries and whatever they’re planning for the future.
