On social media, PlayStation revealed that starting from May 20, 2026, the price of PS Plus would increase in a number of regions due to “ongoing market conditions.” The post did not name regions included in the upcoming change, outside of India and Turkey, but does show prices in US dollars, euros, and British pounds. PS Plus has increased in price in certain regions before. These changes in cost are similar to the PS Plus price increases in Latin America that occurred in 2025.

PlayStation Plus Essential is the lowest and cheapest tier of the subscription service. Players get online multiplayer access, monthly free games, and more. The free games for May include EA Sports FC 26, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, and Nine Sols.
Why This Sudden Increase In Price And Who Will Be Affected By This
According to Sony’s Q3 earnings call in February, PlayStation was looking to increase the price of PS Plus to offset the higher costs caused by memory shortages. The AI boom has led to a global memory issue, with prices for these components increasing as a result. PlayStation’s new chief financial officer, Lin Tao, suggested that the company was looking to increase the cost of network services to shield its hardware from a price increase. Unfortunately, it seems that consumers have ended up with the worst of both worlds as prices for both have been raised within months of each other.

The increase will only affect new PS Plus subscribers, except in Turkey and India, where everyone will be caught up in the change. However, if a current subscriber cancels their subscription or allows it to lapse, then they will need to resubscribe at the new higher price point. PlayStation has only revealed the change in price for the Essential tier, with a month’s subscription increasing from $9.99 to $10.99. This may seem like a small increase, but Extra and Premium subscribers will also see an increase in price that is likely even more significant.
Keep in mind though that if you alter or cancel your subscription in any way you will need to pay the new price. Annual 12 month subscriptions will stay the same. So it is bad news for new subscribers to PlayStation Plus, especially those who had been tempted by some of the latest games being added to the service. Those who have been subscribed for a while though have nothing to worry about provided they do not cancel.
What Is Sony Planning To Do?
In March, PlayStation announced huge console price increases, with some models increasing by as much as $200. While Sony continues to hike the prices of PlayStation products, its main competitor, Xbox recently decreased the price of its Game Pass subscription service. Even though it also announced that Call of Duty would no longer be available as part of the subscription at launch, Xbox’s offer is likely more attractive now that PlayStation has announced its price hike.

And as now there are rumours that PlayStation’s single player games will become exclusive and will no longer be released on PC, already making a large number of gamers unhappy from this.
