Hollow Knight Silksong Outperforms Predecessor Within 30 Minutes of Launch

Hollow Knight Silksong release Hollow Knight Silksong release

Key highlights:

  • Hollow Knight Silksong has surpassed its predecessor within 30 minutes of launch.ย
  • This massive spike in player count is a product of all the hype around the title so far.ย
  • Given its popularity and success, thereโ€™s a chance that Team Cherry might consider working on a sequel or even a DLC, but thatโ€™s hard to say for now.ย

Hollow Knight Silksong is probably having the best launch of the year at this point. The game is so popular that not only has it surpassed its predecessor within 30 minutes of launch, but itโ€™s also managed to take down both the Steam store and the Xbox Store, offline. The volume of players flocking to buy this game is insane at this point, so expect the player count to rise as the day progresses.

This is something that everyone expected from Team Cherry and Hollow Knight Silksong. It wouldโ€™ve been a surprise to see this game not perform in this way. There was a lot of hype behind this game, and the developers have managed to cash in on the hype as well. With it being early morning in the United States, more people are expected to join the game as the day progresses.

Hollow Knight Silksong Surpasses 100k Players Under an Hour of Launch

At the time of writing this article, Hollow Knight Silksong is sitting at 103k players according to Steamdb. This highlights just the number of players on Steam. It does not take into account players coming in through the Xbox Game Pass, nor does it account for the players on console. So, the total number of players in the game currently are way higher across all the platforms than whatโ€™s being reflected on the third-party service.ย

This hype behind Silksong is expected to continue for a short period of time, because itโ€™s safe to say that the game has a sort of a cult following. With no indie or major AAA releases in sight for the time being, Hollow Knight Silksong has dominated the charts at release, and will continue to do so for at least the next week or so. This could also generate new interest in its predecessor too. While that game has already seen a spike in player count, another spike could soon be incoming.

Metroidvania games have had their own charm and approach and Hollow Knight has managed to tell a very heartwarming and an emotional tale. Itโ€™s likely that this new game will do something similar, because it picks up from where the first game left off. With this sudden player count spike, Silksong could also sneak its way into the top contender list for the Game of the Year 2025. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the contenders there, and Hollow Knight Silksong is likely to be another one.ย

Will Hollow Knight Silksong Have a Sequel?

At this point, itโ€™s very hard to answer this question, because we donโ€™t really know how the game ends. However, given the momentum that Team Cherry has gained thanks to this immensely powerful release, itโ€™s possible that theyโ€™ll be considering a sequel or at least a DLC for this title.

Interestingly enough, Silksong started off as a DLC itself, but the content was so large that Team Cherry decided to launch it as a different game altogether. So, keeping in mind their track record, it wouldnโ€™t be right to eliminate the possibility of having a third game in the franchise at this point in time.ย

Team Cherry, however, took seven years to make this game. So, if they are indeed making yet another title in the Hollow Knight series, then thereโ€™s always a chance that itโ€™ll take a really long time to hit the shelves.

But thatโ€™s probably what happens with all good games. Starfield is the only exception to it, and we donโ€™t exactly know how GTA VI is going to perform. But if waiting for a title eagerly leads to something like Silksong, then the wait will always be fruitful.ย
