Key Highlights:
- PlayStation recently held its State of Play event.
- The event featured a segment for the 20th anniversary of the God of War series.
- However, the reveal was quite disappointing.
Sony unveiled a rather surprising State of Play event on September 24, 2025 where it brought with it a multitude of announcements for existing and in-development titles. This year also marks a very significant milestone for the beloved God of War series, as part of its 20th anniversary.
However, all things considered, the event was a major letdown for God of War fans who were perhaps hoping for something more substantial than an (albeit cool looking) official accessory.
Sony Reveals a Limited Edition DualSense Controller for God of Warโs 20th Anniversary
Sony recently unveiled a pre-recorded livestream for its September 2025 State of Play event, where it acknowledged the ongoing 20th anniversary of the God of War series as well.
The series received a tribute in the form of a special, limited edition DualSense controller at the end of the presentation. The controller bears the same unique red mark as the series protagonist, Kratos – embossed over what appears to be a regular, white DualSense controller (with red motifs in its D-Pad and buttons).
Itโs quite the eye catching design, and should prove to be a hit once it officially arrives for around $84.99 a piece.
The controller is currently up for pre-order on October 3, before being released to the masses starting October 23.
This Is Nowhere Near What Fans Were Expecting
To say that this was a disappointing reveal would be an understatement. With the seriesโ 20th anniversary going on, many fans were hoping for something a bit more substantial this time around, over yet another accessory.

While the controller itself does admittedly look quite sleek and minimal, launching this over a new game or remaster is quite the strange move from Sony. Even more so when we consider that the God of War series defined the PS2 back in the day, as did the recent soft reboot and its subsequent sequel.
There Might Still Be a Few Surprises in Stow
That being said, the year is far from over, and Sony might have a few tricks up its sleeve. There is no way that PlayStation will limit Kratos to a singular console accessory, you can be sure of that.
After all, Kratos remains one of PlayStation’s most definitive icons, and has grown to symbolize the brand and a part of the hack and slash genre for a ton of young gamers ever since the first God of War was released back in 2005 for the PS2.
The series has since seen a massive boost, going on to receive multiple sequels, spin offs and even a soft reboot that featured Norse mythology and a more grounded story over the prior established standards.
All entries in the franchise have seen quite a fair bit of success since, and the new God of War: Ragnarok Valhalla DLC did stoke the flames of a potential return to Greek mythology for Kratos as well.
However, Santa Monica Studio is yet to comment on the gameโs future, but we can remain rest assured that a sequel is currently in the works. Recent leaks point toward an ancient Egyptian setting for Kratos this time around, although that really is all we know so far.
There were also rumors of a 2.5D Metroidvania-like God of War game, which is a supposed return to the hack and slash roots of the franchise. Personally though, even a moderately polished remaster of the mainline God of War games (and perhaps even the PSP versions) for the PS5 and PC would be plenty to keep fans happy.
