- FFXIV x Evangelion Alliance Raid collaboration and fan fest announcements.
Final Fantasy XIV 8.0 is called Evercold, and it’s coming in January 2027. Square Enix revealed the FFXIV 8.0 expansion release date at the start of Fan Festival 2026 convention alongside a cinematic trailer teasing some of the expansion’s background story and the characters who’ll make an appearance.
Final Fantasy XIV’s 8th Expansion Unveiled
The Evercold trailer starts with a flashy bit of magic showing the Shards. The idea of visiting other Shards and time periods isn’t particularly new to Final Fantasy XIV, but it’s become an increasingly common focus during Dawntrail and its post game patches. The Warrior of Light, called the Traveler, appears “from the sky” with Estinien and Alphinaud, helping to save a world frozen in ice. No, it’s not a Heavensward Coerthas Redux. This is a totally new world with its own unique problems, including evil mages and what looks like crystal-powered automatons. It’s a “Reflection fallen into ruin, ravaged by ever-spreading ice,” Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida said.
Yoshida said Evercold is part of what Square Enix has internally called the Godless Realm saga, the second part of the new epic that began with 2024’s Dawntrail expansion. Dawntrail was always positioned as a transition game to pivot the MMO from Endwalker into something new, though this is the first time Square Enix actually gave the saga a proper name. Square Enix normally waits until closer to an expansion’s release before announcing a launch date, but Yoshida said they’re confident enough in Evercold to go ahead and let everyone know earlier than usual.

Yoshida said he wouldn’t reveal anything else about Evercold‘s story during Fan Fest, but teased that Final Fantasy XIV 7.5‘s story will set up the transition to Evercold when it goes live next week. Yoshida also shared a lot of concept art teasing Evercold locations most of which aren’t covered in ice, despite what the initial trailer showed and some design concepts for new gear and a cat tribe.
What’s New In Expansion’s Character Customization, Job Progression Changes & More
Square Enix is building on Dawntrail‘s graphical overhaul in some big ways for Evercold, alongside some streamlined job progression improvements.
- Characters will be fully posable in the customization screen
- You’ll have far more character creation options, including hair and skin tone color selections, layered face paint, and more control over eyes iris size, shadowing, and so on
- You can reflect your highest-level items from one job to another, which means you don’t have to go out and grind to get high level items specific to your second job
- Gear items come with toggles that let you turn off certain features, like scarves or belts, so you can tailor your outfits in more ways
- New “character action skins” are a thing, special animations you can customize your character with so they play during certain interactions

Yoshida briefly outlined other improvements that Square Enix will share more about later this year. These include:
- Two new jobs in 8.0 a tank and a physical ranged DPS
- Improved field zones, with “more dynamic” FATEs and events designed to create a feel of “mastering” an area
- Changes to Alliance Raids so they’re less demanding on your time, but they won’t be shortened
- New gear and crafting recipes
- Same-region matchmaking, so you can play with people on any data center and world in your region. Previously, cross-center world play was only possible if you traveled to another world. This change will make it easier to queue for dungeons and raids without making you take extra steps
FFXIV x Evangelion Alliance Raid

Yoshida revealed Final Fantasy XIV 8.0’s Alliance Raid, and it’s a collaboration with the classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Alliance Raids are Final Fantasy XIV‘s 24 person challenges, and they tend to alternate between Final Fantasy-specific references like Dawntrail‘s Final Fantasy XI raid series and crossovers, like the NieR Automata series from Shadowbringers. Yoshida said that Square Enix is handling the series’ development, but Evangelion‘s producer will supervise. Alliance Raids typically span the entirety of a patch cycle Dawntrail‘s ends with patch 7.5 but Yoshida didn’t have specific dates for this collaboration.
