The tactical extraction shooter genre relies heavily on a balance of high-stakes risk, meaningful rewards, and positive community engagement to survive in a competitive live-service market. When Embark Studios first launched ARC Raiders, it seemed to have figured out this formula perfectly, getting the attention of the global gaming community and an incredibly massive player base right out the launch. The title was highly praised for its fluid movement mechanics, intense PvPvE encounters, and stunning visual design.

However, the initial wave of mainstream enthusiasm has completely gone, replaced by a sense of disappointment across social platforms and player forums. What began as a highly promising game release is now facing severe structural issues that risks its long-term survival. A toxic shift in player behavior combined with a severe lack of post-launch support from devs has fundamentally broken the core gameplay, causing the remaining community to stop playing the game.

What “Ratting” Is and Why It’s Killing Arc Raiders

The most immediate threat to the daily player experience in ARC Raiders is the overwhelming annoyance of “ratting,” a highly passive, toxic, and exploitative playstyle that has completely taken over the matchmaking environment. In extraction shooters, a “rat” is defined as a player who deliberately avoids active map exploration, objective questing, or fighting difficult AI enemies. Instead, these players load into matches with minimal, low-tier gear and hide in dark corners or camp heavily choked extraction zones, such as elevators and trains. They wait passively for 30 minutes until a squad finishes the hard work of gathering valuable loot and defeating bosses, only to ambush them from behind as they try to leave.

According to many furious players sharing their experiences in the Reddit, this behavior has changed to a point where almost every single match features these incredibly frustrating players. This is worst ratting behavior seen in any extraction shooter, creating an unrewarding environment. The current game design actively punishes players who engage with the primary mechanics, while heavily rewarding those who play underhandedly with zero risk.

Solos and team queues alike have turned into toxic spaces where cooperation is dead. Veteran players who have already maxed out their skills and blueprints now use their gear advantages exclusively to ambush others rather than progress. This shift has ruined the fun for the casual and competitive player base alike, making the standard loop feel exhausting, deeply unfair, and completely unplayable for those seeking genuine, fair engagement.

Embark’s Content Drought and Arc Raiders 90% Player Base Drop

On top of the toxic gameplay loop is a severe content drought that has triggered many players to leave the game, casting shadow over the game’s future. According to official data tracked on the SteamDB Charts, ARC Raiders achieved an all-time peak of roughly 500,000 concurrent players during its initial launch window. Fast forward to the current period, and those numbers have dropped sharply, with the daily concurrent player count struggling to stay between just 25,000 and 40,000 active users on Steam. Arc raiders has been losing its player base so quickly since the release. This represents a staggering loss of roughly 90% of its initial player base in a matter of months.

While a natural drop-off is normal for live-service titles, this specific freefall is tied directly to a total lack of development momentum. Players looking back at ARC Raiders in retrospect point out that anyone who logged a couple of hundred hours quickly hit a wall, realizing the endgame is entirely empty once top-tier gear and blueprints are unlocked. The sense of discovery is completely gone, leaving only a repetitive, boring grind.

Embark Studios has adopted a remarkably slow development pattern, leaving the community stuck in a multi-month drought with no fresh maps, modes, or content for the game. If Embark Studios wants any chance of saving ARC Raiders, they must urgently pull up their timelines and deliver substantial updates before the remaining community vanishes entirely.
