Destiny 2 continues to have many fans worldwide. The game received its final update on June 9, 2026, which crammed all planned future content into a single update.

Thanks to this wild update, many players have returned to the game, and that number will remain high over the next few days. It’s a bittersweet farewell, and many believe that if this update had come earlier, it’d have saved the game. But that isn’t really the case. Despite the update being good, Destiny 2 would have eventually died down anyway.

Destiny 2’s Latest Update Could Never Have Saved It From Its Plight

Ever since the Light vs Darkness saga concluded, Destiny 2 has been on a downward spiral. The content wasn’t enough to retain players, and with the company shifting its focus to Marathon, there was little hope that the game would survive in the long run. But with the content the developers pushed out in the final update, many feel the game would’ve survived had they released it earlier. But that isn’t the case.

Whatever Bungie has just released with their final update is everything they had planned for months to come, crammed into a single update. Had Sony not pulled the plug on the servers, these would’ve been drip-fed over time and wouldn’t have yielded the player reaction the game is getting at this point.

I would’ve paid for an update like this. This is Destiny 2.5.

There were a lot of problems with Destiny 2, especially after the Final Shape came to an end. With the defeat of the Witness, a ten-year-long saga came to a close. And while it’s understood that the developers needed time to establish the foundation for another saga, the seasons following The Final Shape and in the Edge of Fate weren’t impactful enough, and the game struggled with player retention.

Although it would be wrong to blame Marathon for killing Destiny 2, it was somewhat evident that Sony would be pulling the plug on its popular looter shooter eventually. Marathon hasn’t been overly successful either. The game has a steep learning curve and isn’t what anyone would term beginner-friendly. So, it’s no surprise to see that the numbers haven’t been as high as one would’ve expected them to be.

Additionally, Destiny 2 is an old game built on an older engine, so the cracks in its performance were showing up. One would’ve expected Sony to shift to Destiny 3 soon, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, as it’s believed they were burning money on this project. The games’ primary issues began with Lightfall, and unfortunately, they couldn’t recover from it. Multiple layoffs made the situation worse.

Now, over the years, one of the prime reasons why players stuck around with Destiny 2 was the storyline that it had to offer. It’s very difficult to come across a looter shooter with a storyline as impactful as the Light and Dark saga, and it’s unfortunate that it had to end this way. There’s a bleak chance that Sony might not scrap Destiny 2 entirely, should the current player numbers hold out strong for months to come.

But even with the current quality of life upgrades and the content dump that the developers have pushed to the game, it’s unlikely that the player numbers will hold high for a long time. They could go down the Division route however, where a small team of developers stay on Destiny 2 and conduct regular maintenance till Destiny 3 comes along, but all of that is wishful thinking for the time being.

The only good part about this is that the servers are still up and Sony isn’t shutting down the servers for good. Players from all over the world have invested a lot of time and money into this so, shutting the servers would’ve invited another backlash. So unless something drastic happens, this is where the line ends for Destiny 2.
