CS2 Cache Is Finally Back With A New Look; Check What’s New

  • CS2 hinting return of Cache map on Twitter/X.
  • When can we expect Cache to release and the new changes to the map.
  • Why so much hype around Cache coming back and a trip back in memory lane of Cache from the start .

After several small teases, Valve has finally confirmed the Cache CS2 release for next week. The developer initially changed its X header teasing the new version of the long-awaited map, but it has now revealed that its launch is just around the corner.

CS2 Devs Potentially Hint at Cache Return

Earlier today, the official CS2 X handle changed its profile banner to a cryptic image, sending the community into a frenzy. While a banner change might not seem like much on the surface, fans were swift to notice that the new CS2 banner seems to resemble a spot near the T-Spawn from Cache closely.

The banner is not the first time Valve has used their CS2 X banner as a teaser; in fact, itโ€™s not even the first time they have done it in Counter-Strike 2. They used the same strategy for the long-awaited release of Train. Train was part of CS2โ€™s announcement videos, but was not released into the game until November 2024, 14 months after CS2โ€™s release. Valve shared two images, displaying the floor of the mapโ€™s spawns, before releasing the map nine days after the initial teaser.

Why So Much Hype Around Cache?

“Why so much hype and craze for just a map?”, Which sounds valid from the point of a player, who just started with Counter Strike with the launch of CS2 in 2023. But for players and fans who have been part of this journey from the very beginning, know what we all miss and nostalgia is a big factor in this whole hype too.

Cache was promised to be reworked with new Valve’s Source 2 Engine and new lighting along with other maps. although later it felt for a while like Valve forgot about cache, but now after almost 3 years we finally have some info from valve about cache.

The history of Cache in Counter-Strike

Cache was originally created by Shawn โ€˜FMPONEโ€™ Snelling, becoming a part of the Active Duty map pool in July 2014 upon the release of Operation Breakout. The map remained in the Active Duty map pool until March 2019, when it was removed in favour of Vertigo. Since then, the map has not returned to the professional circuit.

In September 2019, the map received a significant rework. Known colloquially as โ€˜Green Cacheโ€™ due to its mossy veneer, the map proved to be unpopular, with many PCs struggling to run the more detailed map at the time. Out of the map pool, the map remained in FMPONEโ€™s hands for six more years, with the map maker releasing a CS2 rework in March 2025. That version of the map was recently added to the FACEIT Season 8 map pool after a community vote. In May 2025, FMPONE announced that he had officially sold the map to Valve, finally giving Valve full creative control of the map and all but confirming that it would return at some stage.

Valve later confirmed that they were working on the map in January, replying โ€œItโ€™s cookingโ€ to a NAVI social media post about the map. That slow-cooking finally seems to be coming to completion, with Valveโ€™s latest teaser

The New Redesigned Cache And When Can We Expect This To Be Released

Since the release of CS2 back in 2023, Valve has been remastering classic Counter-Strike maps for the new game, giving them fresh coats of paint and adjusting how they play. Now, we’re getting our first look at the new version of Cache, with Valve giving us a sneak peek at T-side spawn. All we’ve gotten so far is a shot of the floor, which features a zebra crossing spreading across the concrete. While that may not sound like much, it’s clear to see that there have been some major improvements to both the textures and lighting of the map, especially when you compare the image from their X account to the CS:GO version of the map.

As for when we’ll get our hands on the new version of the map? That remains to be seen, but if history tells us anything, Valve doesn’t drop teasers for new additions until they’re ready to release, so it seems likely that we’re looking at weeks and possibly days, rather than having to wait months. Cache joins Inferno, Train, and Overpass as the fourth classic CS2 map to be remade. With the game running on the improved Source 2 engine, Valve can improve the graphics and textures of its maps, making the game feel fresh.

This has been an extremely busy week for Counter-Strike already, with Valve dropping an update on Tuesday, April 21 that introduced AnimGraph, a new animation system that improved the movement of characters in-game. You may read more on AnimGraph here. They followed this up a day later with a second patch that adjusted the camera motion when firing weapons to feel more like CS:GO – a change that has received widespread praise.
