The Age of Empires franchise has always been a classic for PC players, and the upcoming DLC for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is shaping up to be quite exciting as well.
Titled The Last Chieftains, the expansion promises to bring about hours of grinding and endless fun, presenting some rather glorious strategy conquest. With all that in mind, here’s everything we know about the DLC.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Gets The Last Chieftains DLC
The Last Chieftains is a brand new expansion for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, and was released on February 17, 2026 across the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The team behind the game announced the same in a blog post, which brings with it three new campaigns, new civilizations as well as an overall theme based on the Inca/native South Americans.

The DLC was up for pre order as early as January 2026 (with a notable omission from the PlayStation 5) across PC and console.
What’s New In The Last Chieftains
The Last Chieftains brings with it a bunch of improvements and additions over the first game. In addition to the Inca, the following South American civilizations have been added with the DLC:
- Mapuche
- Muisca
- Tupi
Each civilization is essentially a playable class, and behaves a bit differently from the rest of the others.
We also have a grand total of three new, playable campaigns with a total of 15 scenarios in place. These will be based on folk heroes, and bring with them a host of memorable characters.
Of particular highlight here is the fact that certain scenario choices appear to be carried on over to other parts of the campaign, keeping a sense of coherence and continuity. We also have differing perspectives in play with the Muisca campaign.
There’s also the quality of life features added with the DLC. This includes voice chat, which is pretty self explanatory, and the use of Garrison flags. Garrison flags replace generic flags with something that has a bit more flair.
There are also a total of 13 new achievements to grab.
What Is Age of Empires 2?
Age of Empires 2 is best described as an RTS (real time strategy) game set within the middle ages. The game covers a wide, vast selection of human civilizations and was initially released by Ensemble Studios (developer) and Microsoft (publisher) in 1999.
The game is often considered to be a classic RTS, and has seen a few re-releases since then, with the Definitive Edition being the most recent release, on November 14, 2019.
Also known as update 32708, this particular Definitive Edition features significant upgrades over the original 1999 release’s contents. This includes updated visuals, a remastered soundtrack and all the content from the HD Edition, as well as The Last Khans.
In a nutshell, the game has been entirely reworked to bring it to modern systems, with the necessary additions (and a few removals in place).
