Sean Murray discussed the Pokemon-style, turn-based Xeno Arena update, released on April 8, 2026, in a press release detailing new creature battle mechanics. The update introduces mechanics for training wildlife and engaging in tactical battles at Holo-Arena tables, inspired by creature-collecting games. Most of the players who visited other planets in their journey have been teaming with the wildlife. However, for the first time these creatures are now going to be your companions.

The new Hollow Arenas can be found located in both space stations and in the Nexus, with players able to battle their pets against friends, strangers, and NPCs. Plus players can earn some sweet rewards if they are victorious. There are daily challenges too, in fact Dev calls the Hollow Arenas as an entire multiplayer game all on its own with absolutely tons of depth, now existing with No Man’s Sky.

How Does This Pokemon-Like Alien Creature Thing Work?

Each of the game’s alien species has a unique elemental affinity tied to their homeworld, which players will be able to take advantage of. For example, a blob creature evolved on toxic planet has different abilities to a flying dino-born on a frozen moon. The rarer the biome of a creature, the stronger that creature is. In fact there are some legendary variants which are the rarest of all.

Players can train, breed, and genetically modify their creature which all sounds a bit dark, but the creatures don’t mind it in this universe. Feeding them or sparring with your little fellows can raise their abilities as you form deeper bonds, similar to Pokemon and other similar creature based fighting based games. The Xeno Arena itself is a new multiplayer enabled structure, where players can construct and open to other travellers.

Devs have promised to introduce a league and future seasonal reward system with ranked seasonal rewards, to keep the competition alive in the new Xeno Arena update. But for now players will only be able to challenge friends to creature battles, host tournaments and travel the Galaxy taking other players in Arena Championships. This year would mark completion of 10 years of No Man’s Sky, since its launch. Murray says “for any game to reach such a milestone is a privilege it won’t be possible without player’s continued support and we generally appreciate it.” Xeno Arena update is out across all platforms now with the passion notes available on the No Man’s Sky website.
