Key Highlights:

  • A 2D side scroller God of War game might make its way to additional platforms.
  • This could hopefully include the Nintendo Switch 2 as well.
  • The system is more than capable for the task, and Sony has been dabbling with ditching exclusivity for a while.

The God of War franchise has seen numerous iterations and soft reboots over the past decade or so. The series has also had quite a few spinoffs, with the PSP versions arguably being the best ones of the lot.

Now, the rumored 2D side scroller God of War game is expected to go multiplatform, and here’s how this could tie into a potential Nintendo Switch 2 release.

God of War’s 2D Variant Might Go Multiplatform

A 2D, Metroidvania styled God of War game has been rumored to be in development for quite some time now. Now, as per leaker NateTheHate, the team behind the game have been seriously considering a multiplatform release.

It should be noted here that the idea was only up for ‘consideration’ back during the initial pitch, and there really is no way to confirm whether the game really will be going multiplatform after all.

What we do know is the fact that Sony was invested in a multiplatform release back in the day, whether they actually went on through with it remains uncertain.

However, given recent trends, this is expected to take fruit. Now, we don’t really know whether this is going to be a true multiplatform release, or simply a port restricted to the PC version (in addition to a PS5 version).

While NateTheHate has been consistently spot on with respect to leaks, such information should always be taken with a grain of salt. Expect changes, and at worst, a complete dismissal of the multiplatform aspect.

How This Ties Into A Nintendo Switch 2 Release

The magic word here is multiplatform. The Nintendo Switch 2 could be a potential candidate, and Sony isn’t shy to the idea of ditching exclusivity anymore. We saw PlayStation break this trend first with the eventual release of its first party exclusives on the PC, which saw great success, with the program continuing on to this day.

This was followed by the surprise release of Helldivers 2 (initially a PC/PS5 only game) for the Xbox Series X/S, marking a dramatic tonal shift for the company.

Thats about it in terms of first party releases though, and PlayStation is yet to port any of its other flagship titles to rival consoles.

The strategy is quite simple really, which is to get you to buy a PlayStation first, or be patient and switch to PC gaming. Additionally, this move seems to be restricted to live service and third party titles as of now, with the newest LEGO Horizon Adventures being a great example.

The game is available for the Nintendo Switch 1 console and would be a more recent PlayStation entry into Nintendo’s otherwise very walled game ecosystem.

With the release of the 2D God of War game, and the possibility of the team heading toward multiplatform, a Nintendo Switch 2 port could most definitely be on the cards.

The Switch 2 also has the grunt to run it as well, having enough horsepower to run a 2D Metroidvania with all the bells and whistles.
