- However, one game has been swept under the rug.
2025 has been a fantastic year for video games, with many titles fighting for the rather coveted Game of The Year crown. Competition is fierce, and this yearโs participants range from AAA to indie classes, covering a wide range of genres.
Itโs sure to be a bloodbath, but there still is quite the peculiar little title many have seemingly missed so far, having it buried under the rubble. This game is none other than Blue Prince.
Blue Prince Is 2025โs Most Underrated Title So Far
Blue Prince was one of 2025โs surprise new additions, poised as a deceptively simple puzzle game. The premise is also a bit unique, having players explore Mt. Holly, a manor that possesses procedurally generated rooms. That being said, the gameโs procedural generation is tightly choreographed, resulting in a very cohesive experience.
This is while having to solve a series of interconnected puzzles that progress the overarching plot and backdrop. It really is a โgenre defyingโ experience, as its Steam page suggests.
In a way, its quite similar to the โHouse of Leavesโ, another โgenre defyingโ book that took its readers for a spin back in 2000. Both works of fiction feature a non linear way of storytelling, and narratives that warp reality.

Blue Prince is not just about narratives though, and it featured beautiful, cel shaded visuals. This is on top of having a spectacular soundtrack as well. Blue Prince also has the gameplay to back it up as well.
The core puzzle solving segments of Blue Prince are solid, and offer a ton of variety to go along with them. The game also features a deck builder-like mechanic, which is also quite fun to use.
Itโs definitely not the most accessible title out there either though, and Blue Prince can require some patience to clear. That being said, its nice to see another unique, indie game lead the race for the Game of the Year again, even if 2025 is jam packed with entries.
Other Game of the Year Worthy Titles You Should Keep an Eye Out For
The first entry has to be, without a doubt, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Released back in April of 2025, the game almost instantly won acclaim from both fans and critics alike, with many already calling it the Game of The Year.
Expedition 33โs dreams of Game of the Year might be in jeopardy though, thanks to the recently released Hollow Knight: Silksong. This Metroidvania managed to crash all major storefronts minutes after its release, which should tell you all you need to know about its popularity.
Silksong is the sequel to 2017โs Hollow Knight, and was initially planned as a DLC, before becoming its own game. It can also be rightfully referred to as the GTA 6 of the indie world, and many studios shifted their release timings to shy away from Team Cherryโs release.
There was also Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, which got swept under the release of the two aforementioned games. KCD2 is a masterpiece, and improves upon the original in almost every way possible.
We canโt end this list without mentioning Hideo Kojimaโs weird, wacky and thought provoking Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. A sequel to 2019โs Death Stranding, this game managed to top charts (despite being a PS5 exclusive) and earn critical acclaim from critics worldwide.
Itโs a culmination of all things Kojima, and really represents the best of what heโs made so far into one, complete package.
With that in mind, 2025 is far from over, and we still have quite a few heavy hitters en route, such as Supermassive Gamesโ Hades 2 release.
