Counter-Strike 2 or CS2 players have discovered an undocumented chicken pet system following Valve’s September 22 update, with some Weekly Care Packages now offering a Chicken Egg alongside the game’s other rewards. The discovery came shortly after the Rush Hour update went live, although Valve’s official patch notes do not mention the eggs or a pet system. Players quickly began sharing screenshots of the new item on X and Reddit, with some showing the egg appearing beside their character in the main menu. Ozzny’s post on X highlighted the discovery, while a separate preview shared by Gabe Follower showed an early look at the chicken pet system. The update officially focuses on the new Rush 3v3 mode and several gameplay changes, making the chicken system an unexpected addition for players.

The Chicken Egg discovery began after players received their Weekly Care Packages following the September 22 update. Ozzny posted an image of the egg asking what it was, and the thread took off from there.

The egg appears to be connected to a new pet system that lets players hatch and raise their own chicken. According to early player reports and testing of the feature, selecting the Chicken Egg uses both reward slots in that week’s Care Package, meaning players receive the egg instead of the other available rewards. The egg itself is also reported to be untradeable and does not appear to have a Steam Market value. After obtaining an egg, players can see it in the main menu while it progresses toward hatching. The egg hatches in about a week and moves through four stages: Egg, Chick, Pullet and Hen. Players can also interact with the pet and save photos in the HatchBook, using a photo booth that lets you pose with the chicken and add accessories and effects. The feature appears to have several cosmetic variations. Game files point to three breeds, Catalana, Silkie and Polish, across 34 colour patterns, although some of these details remain based on files and early player discoveries rather than a formal Valve announcement. Offstage also reported that data miners found animations and references to items associated with the pet system.
Feed also comes from Weekly Care Packages and also costs both slots, an unfed pet leaves for good, an unfed egg never hatches, and hens have a limited lifespan.

Gabe Follower provided another look at the feature in an X post showing a preview of the chicken pets. The footage gives players a closer look at how the system appears in-game, Chickens can also join you in matches from the Pullet stage, in solo queue or when you are the lobby host.
Chicken Pets Arrive Alongside CS2’s Rush Hour Update
The chicken discovery comes as part of a much larger Counter-Strike 2 update. Valve’s official September 22 announcement introduces Rush, a new queued 3v3 mode where teams move through randomly selected battle arenas while attempting to reach the opposing team’s castle. The mode also adds a different objective structure, with teams fighting for control of a tower before progressing through the arenas. The update also changes Premier map selection. Instead of the previous process of banning maps until one remains, the two teams now make a series of selections that leaves four maps in consideration before the game randomly chooses one for the match. Valve said the change is intended to give players more opportunities to use maps they have been learning. Several gameplay adjustments were included as well. Players can now hold the reload key to perform a slower silent reload, while un-scoping a sniper weapon no longer produces a sound. Valve also made changes to visual clarity, bullet impact decals, crosshair options, clan tags and other parts of the game.
The only chicken in the changelog is a line saying chickens now take damage from the Zeus. Eggs, feed and pets appear nowhere. That has left players relying on their own discoveries, screenshots and game-file information to understand how the pet system works. Dexerto, which first confirmed the both-slots behaviour, reported that players found the egg within hours of the patch, its lack of trading functionality and the addition of a Pet Book. Valve has published nothing about the system, so the mechanics below come from game files and player testing rather than an official description. Every egg picked means one fewer case and one fewer skin entering circulation.
