Marvel’s Wolverine Actor Liam McIntyre Was “Scared to Go All Out” Playing Feral Logan

Liam McIntyre had not attempted animal work since drama school around 20 years ago. The Spartacus lead took it up again for Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games’ new title, in which he plays Logan. He describes a role that asked a lot of him emotionally and dramatically and pushed him into places he had never been.

The game releases on PlayStation 5 on September 15 and shares a universe with Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. The tone is where the two diverge. This Logan is darker and more feral, and reaching that version unsettled the actor in a way he speaks about openly.

How Liam McIntyre Built “Feral Logan”

The berserker mode gave McIntyre the most trouble. To find the animalistic Logan that emerges in full rage, he searched for reference footage of rabid dogs, which he says is very hard to find, and probably for the best. The point was less imitation than nerve, and he frames it as being courageous in a way he had not reached for as an actor in some time.

That nerve nearly deserted him on the motion-capture stage. When he arrived to shoot the physical performance, he feared the whole thing would either work or really not work. His team later called the result terrifying, which reassured him without quite settling his doubts. He admits he was scared to go all out, and credits the studio for making the leap feel safe, because he trusted them to tell him when a take was not landing.

The adjustment was steep for an actor used to the physical sets of Spartacus. Animation director Brian Wyser recalls repeatedly telling McIntyre to trust that a performance built in a white room in a mo-cap suit would look good on screen. Narrative director Walt Williams describes the outcome as one of the most raw and honest performances he has seen in the medium.

Why This Version of Logan Is Different

Insomniac’s reading of the character leans toward the human rather than the superhuman. Williams frames Logan as one of the most human figures in comic history, a man born different who is not really a superhero, carrying lifetimes of pain and torment inside him. His view that such rage cannot exist without a deep and caring heart underneath became the idea McIntyre played toward. The actor says he chased a man who could be gruff and angry while also loyal, big-hearted, and passionate.

McIntyre’s approach follows what Yuri Lowenthal did with Peter Parker in Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. He drew on the range of existing Wolverine stories to build a Logan that reads as recognisable yet specific to this game. As detailed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, an expanding script kept opening new ways into who the character was.

What Marvel’s Wolverine Changes About Insomniac’s Universe

The setting breaks deliberately from the welcoming, superhero-friendly world of Marvel’s Spider-Man. Wolverine takes place before the X-Men exist. Humanity knows about heroes like Spider-Man, but mutants still live in the shadows, feared by some people and hunted by others. Williams says the team wanted to remind players that mutants are outsiders, and that Logan is an outsider even among his own kind.

Within that world, Logan works for Team X, a black-ops group inspired by the comics and fighting for mutant survival. The framing places his isolation ahead of his powers, which is the emotional territory McIntyre was so wary of entering fully. Insomniac plans a fresh look at the game during its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
