Key Highlights:
- Xbox has embraced the idea of releasing its games on multiple platforms, including those of its competitors.
- PlayStation has also released its titles on Xbox and PC.
- Nintendo remains adamant in its stand, choosing to not release its exclusives.
Multiplatform is the future, and Xbox is here to herald its calling. The video game giant has experimented heavily with the idea of multiplatform releases for quite some time now, with most of its exclusives making their way over to competitor platforms (such as the upcoming Halo CE remake).
While Xbox is embracing the future, PlayStation and Nintendo have chosen to stick to their guns, locking their titles in the fangs of exclusivity deals. However, things are destined to change very soon.
Xbox Has Given Up on Platform Exclusivity Completely
Xbox has long given up locking games to its own platform. This move started with the eventual and then simultaneous release of its games on PC, and was quite a shocking move.
Exclusivities are what bind a player to a particular console, and Xboxโs decision here might have been a fatal mistake. Xbox has most certainly seen better days, with the company closing down multiple projects and entire studios, in addition to a mass wave of layoffs.
That being said, having already embraced it, Xbox can do naught but commit to the mission. They will keep releasing games for the competition as well, and Xbox might go on to take the same route as SEGA did, relegated to being a publisher for games and specific hardware.
The only way is forward, and Xboxโs moves have somewhat stirred the competition into adopting the same moves, which is nice to see.

Xbox seems very keen on learning from its competitors as well. Screenshots of a recent survey popped up on X recently, wherein Xbox Insider users were asked a bunch of questions regarding Ghost of Yotei, which sparked speculation and intrigue.
PlayStation Is Starting to Embrace the Same, but Nintendo Remains Firm in Its Stand
PlayStation was initially reluctant to embrace multiplatform releases, but has relented a lot in the past few years. They initially began by releasing their games on PCs, albeit later, when the PS5 exclusivity ended.
This was the norm for quite some time, but was broken by PlayStation releasing Helldivers 2 on the Xbox Store. This was a monumental shift in strategy, and Helldivers 2 was incredibly well received by the Xbox community, soaring the game to newer heights.
With the gates wide open, thereโs always a chance for other PlayStation games to make their way to Xbox. While this is likely going to be restricted to live service games going forward, we might even have a few surprises in the form of single player titles along the way.

This is likely to follow into the next gen Xbox (Magnus), which is expected to be running Windows 11 under the hood. Which in other words means that you will be able to run PlayStationโs PC ports on the console.
That being said, the only one out of the trio who seems to be stuck doing its own thing is Nintendo. This is not likely to change anytime soon, and first party titles will continue to remain locked on Nintendo hardware.
At the very least however, Nintendo has started to relent on releasing third party games on its platforms. Theyโve eased up to the idea, and we have multitudes of third party games making their way to the Switch 2 now.
