Key Highlights:
- God Of War had a special segment in lieu of its 20th anniversary at the State of Play.
- A new 2D game, titled Sons of Sparta was announced for the PS5.
- A complete remake of the original trilogy is also in development.
The recent PlayStation State of Play brought with it a ton of announcements, including the return of a few iconic franchises. The God Of War series in particular, had a few choice announcements including a complete remake of the original trilogy.
PlayStation still had a lot more to give though, including a 2D God Of War game known as Sons of Sparta, which can be best described as an experimental title set in Kratosโs younger years. Hereโs what we know about the game so far.
God Of War: Sons of Sparta Is Out Now
Developed by Mega Cat Studios, God of War: Sons of Sparta is essentially a 2D Metroidvania like title that closely follows Kratosโ past and is shaping up to be quite an exciting little diversion.
Sons of Sparta is also the second game to feature Kratosโ long forgotten brother, Deimos (the first being Ghost of Sparta, a PSP exclusive) although we really donโt know the extent of his involvement in the story this time around.
TC Carson also reprises his role as an older Kratos for the first time in a decade, serving as the gameโs narrator.
The visceral combat of the original trilogy has made its way to 2D form, crafted beautifully in hand drawn pixel art animations and sprites, where a younger, less powerful Kratos must make use of his spear and shield to best enemies.

Thats not all though, as Kratos will have access to a wide range of magical abilities through artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus to aid him in his quest.
The Sons of Sparta is out now for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro systems, with both Standard ($29.99) and Deluxe ($39.99) editions being available. Thereโs not much of a difference in the two editions, save for a few cosmetic extras and the digital soundtrack/artbook in the Deluxe versions.
Interestingly, this is a PlayStation only release, meaning the title will not be making its way toward alternative platforms, such as the Nintendo Switch 2 or PC right now. Itโs unclear whether Sony will port this game to other systems.
The Original God Of War Trilogy Is Up Next For A Remake
Thatโs not the only surprise Santa Monica Studios had up for us during the State of Play. The dev team recently announced a full blown series of remakes for the original God Of War trilogy (1, 2 and 3) which are currently in active development.
The remakes will be voiced by the original voice of Kratos, TC Carson which should breathe a fresh wave of nostalgia to gamers. As far as the release date and platforms are concerned, there isnโt a whole lot to go over currently.
The project is still in a very early stage of development, so it might be a while before we have any concrete information.
That being said, fans have been requesting for a remake of the trilogy for years, and thereโs no better place to start than the first two God Of War games, which despite being fantastic titles to this very day, need a bit of polish and upgrades to make it stay more in line with modern releases.
