Key Highlights:
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will head to the Xbox Series and Switch 2 in 2026.
- The game is being released a whole 2 years after its PS5 launch.
- Things might be different for the third and final entry of the trilogy.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released way back in February, 2024 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive – before being ultimately ported over to the PC a whole year later on January, 2025. Now, it would appear that Square Enix intends to release the game on the Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 – assuming the leaks hold true.
This was a part of a much larger leak from SwitchForce, which hinted at the release of multiple current-gen titles for the Switch 2 as part of its multiplatform strategy, which also happens to include the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
More on these leaks, and what to expect in terms of content and performance in the sections below.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Expected to Head to Xbox and Nintendo Consoles in 2026
As per leaker NateTheHate, Square Enixโs second entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, Rebirth, is expected to be ported over to the Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles some time in 2026.
This information will likely be shared during an upcoming Nintendo Direct, along with a few surprise announcements. The exact date is yet to be shared, so itโs anyoneโs guess right now. However, a Holiday 2026 release is quite likely, and it would align with Squareโs recent shift toward breaking away from exclusivity.
Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Be Able to Run Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?
While the Xbox Series X/S will no doubt be able to run Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth with relative ease (especially given that the Series X is equivalent to a PlayStation 5 in terms of raw processing power), the Nintendo Switch 2 version might be a questionable release.
After all, the Switch 2 is a far less powerful machine, being optimized for battery efficiency and handheld play. As such, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is not going to have the same level of visual fidelity when compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions.
Image quality should be noticeably worse with artifacts (a byproduct of heavy upscaling), and performance should be wonky at best – given how poorly the game can run on a base PS5 at times. Rebirth isnโt exactly the most optimized game out there.
That being said, the usage of a custom version of DLSS in the Switch 2 might just be what Rebirth needs to hit playable frame rates, all while maintaining some level of image clarity. Like most modern Switch 2 releases, we expect there to be both Quality (30 FPS) and Performance (40-60 FPS) modes in both handheld and docked situations.

Final Fantasy 7 Part 3 Is Likely to Be a Multiplatform Release
Square Enix appears to have entirely dropped its PlayStation exclusivity deal, instead working on releasing its games across all feasible platforms. This was seen with the recent Final Fantasy 16 as well, which now possesses both a PC and Xbox Series X/S port.
The reasoning behind this is quite simple – profits, as restricting your game to a singular platform bars you from gaining sales from other avenues. Square has not considered its recent releases to be financial successes, and this switch was very much needed.
As such, the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy could very well be a multiplatform release. The game is likely to release on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and surprisingly enough, the Nintendo Switch 2 on day one.
Overall, this is a good move that removes the annoyance that is timed exclusivity entirely. On the other hand, this could discourage players from sticking to a particular system, which could create a peculiar situation.
