Battlefield 6โ€™s Lack of Console Only Matchmaking Could Be a Major Setback, Here’s How

Key Highlights:

  • Battlefield 6 will include console and PC crossplay at launch.
  • The game also has the ability to disable crossplay entirely.
  • However, there is no way to disable matchmaking with PC players in crossplay modes.

Battlefield 6 is almost here, and Electronic Artsโ€™s upcoming first person shooter extraordinaire is set to launch for both PCs and consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) on October 10, 2025. The game will feature crossplay and matchmaking right off the bat, which is par for the course these days.

However, publisher Electronic Arts has seemingly chosen to make a certain exception for PC gamers, which might ruin console only matchmaking, on account of there being an overwhelming number of bad actors.

Battlefield 6 Will Not Feature True Console-Only Matchmaking

As mentioned by Electronic Arts during an exclusive interview (courtesy of Insider Gaming), Battlefield 6 was originally set to have a proper, console only matchmaking mode. As it would suggest, this would only allow for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S players to jump into the game and play with or against each other.

This also meant that players on consoles could choose to block PC players from participating in crossplay scenarios.

However, a new report from Dexerto has revealed that EA has seemingly backtracked on the feature. As of the time of writing this article, crossplay in Battlefield 6 will face no such restrictions.

However, the game will automatically prioritize console players during matchmaking, and only fill up the remaining slots with PC players if more players are required.

There is a workaround though, and that involves disabling crossplay entirely. While this will entirely remove all PC players from joining the game, it also comes with the side effect of blocking alternative console platforms in the process.

This removal of a true console only matchmaking feature is quite puzzling to say the least, and remains a massive missed opportunity.

There Are Exploits on Console Too, but PC Still Possesses an Overwhelming Majority

The PC platform has always been problematic, at least with regards to cheats. A majority of in-game exploits and hacks are found concentrated in the PC versions of the most popular first person shooter titles, and Battlefield 6 is no exception.

Players have already managed to get exploits running on the beta, despite the inclusion of stringent PC specific checks such as Secure Boot and a kernel level anti-cheat solution. Even the developers have mentioned that fighting against cheats is an โ€˜uphill battleโ€™, and thereโ€™s only so much that they can do about it.

As such, expect there to be an overwhelmingly large number of exploits for PC on release. Assuming Battlefield LABS and EA manage to routinely keep pruning these bad actors, we might just have a way to keep the game enjoyable for others.

That being said, consoles arenโ€™t exactly free of cheats either. Modern, hardware level exploits such as Cronus are still widely available, if not a bit niche. The good news is that console specific cheats take a bit more effort to get up and running (given the closed nature of the platform).

However, these arenโ€™t particularly difficult to obtain, more so when we consider that it can be installed by third parties. Cheats such as Cronus are very hard to detect due to their tight integration with the system hardware, and are arguably a worse alternative to cheaters on PC.

No matter how you slice it, cheating in video games is a major issue still. As long as there are games, players will try to find exploits. There is no way to weed out these hacks for good, resulting in an endless game of cat and mouse.
