Key Highlights:

  • A new Call of Duty title is set to be released in 2027.
  • The new game will not feature Zombies as a game mode, but instead a brand new cast of characters set between 1990 to the 2000s.
  • All things considered, the franchise is on rather thin ice at the moment.

Call of Duty has most certainly seen better days as of late, with the giant video game franchise having gone through several iterations before ultimately settling on the rather middling Black Ops 7, a game that was panned by players worldwide.

That being said, all hope might not be lost just yet as the next, 2027 release for Call of Duty might be looking to shake up the formula and keep things fresh, if only for a while.

New Call of Duty Game to Release in 2027

As per an exclusive leak from X user TheGhostOfHope, the next mainline Call of Duty game is set to be released in 2027, and will be made by none other than Sledgehammer Games.

The new Call of Duty will also be designated as a brand new sub franchise, with a completely new cast of characters set within the early 2000s to late 1990s.

Other details include the return of Omnimovement, a major (and quite beloved) perk, with the removal of a Tac Sprint option. Pick 10 is also expected to make a return, and the team is currently in talks to push the same.

There have also been mentions of a High Returns game mode as the potential third option, instead of Zombies.

Unfortunately, the leak does mention that the Zombies game mode will not be making a return this time around, which is quite disappointing to be very honest.

TheGhostOfHope has had a very decent track record when it comes to leaks, and this information can be taken with some degree of certainty to it. That being said, leaks are still leaks, and we could very well see things change later down the line as we near the 2027 release date.

But Will It Be Enough?

To say that Activision has squandered the goodwill of its player base would be an understatement. While Call of Duty was always a very popular franchise to begin with, the game achieved new heights with the release of the original Modern Warfare trilogy and the first few Black Ops games that followed.

This quickly fell to pieces though, when Activision chose to release Call of Duty titles in a yearly fashion to maximize profits and pump up more recycled content each year.

It took a while, but players finally grew tired of the same, mediocre releases that sparked no joy and quickly turned their sights to greener pastures. This culminated in the latest Black Ops 7 being panned by players across the globe, as they flocked to the arguably superior Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders instead.

Activision has to face reality here, and start implementing a series of changes to their overall game design and progression elements. Itโ€™s clear here that players want a quality product, and itโ€™s not something that Activision can provide at the moment.

This might just be another case of too little, too late. Players have already grown tired of Activisionโ€™s antics, and there is not much reason to get excited about a new Call of Duty title at all.

Assuming they manage to pull off a miracle, a return to form would be much appreciated. Gone are the glory days of Black Ops and Modern Warfare, and a fresh new start might just be what the franchise needs at present.
